Hey all, I've been lurking at these forums for a few days as I introduce myself into the culture i've been fascinated with for years but am just now taking the step into discovering who I really am as someone who would fit in well here.

With my introduction out of the way, here is my question for this topic:
I'm a college student and I live in a dorm. I have one window but my spot isnt near it, my roomates is. I am looking for a couple of small plants that I could keep in my dorm that don't require a lot of sunlight and that would be easily maintened in this surrounding. If anyone could help I would appreciate it very much

It depends what direction the window faces and if you just would like a plant for foliage or do you wish some color or flower? Jade plants are good beginner plants, as is the Sansevieria or snake plant, you can't hardly kill them. Kalanchoe plants can give you both, if you are careful not to overwater. And they come in a variety of colors and some have variegated foliage.

That looks lovely. After reading that page it sounds like it would be perfect in here. Thanks!!

Oh, and the window faces north.

Well I hope you leave lights on, because they do need light, and a northern window doesn't provide much on it's own. But being college dormy someone is always in or out most of the time.

Spider plants, in my experience, have been fairly indistructable.

succulents!!!!! i'm a houseplant murderer :( , and even i cannot kill most succulents. also philodendrens (sp?) can take a lot of abuse. when i lived in a dormroom, i had a chifelera (sp? sorry), but it was a light hog. thrived for a year, then croaked. every one after that has croaked. on the other hand, i just remembered the other day that i still have an aloe plant (it's on a high shelf in my bathroom) and when i checked on it, it seemed to be doing just dandy. i forgot it for a couple months....
