I'm having some issues with my dreads!
I haven't had time to keep them up and work on them, so right now, my roots are basically all matted, and then theres seperated chunks of hair that comes out of the matted roots (its basically like a giant horizontal dread). I'm not too sure how I should seperate the dreads to make them more defined.. Would It be a good idea to cut through the matted root? and then use elastics to seperate? I've ripped them apart a little but, But I'm not sure what the best thing to do is! I did have elastics in them from the start, but the elastics got gross and sticky and i had to get them out, and thats what started the problem.
Is there any way of saving them?
    Should I start from new?
    Any help is appreciated!

Rip them apart, don't cut. I you don't want to rip yourself, let someone else do it. If you don't want to use bands, try beads, work quite well to round them.

rip, rip, rip. cutting will ruin the natural structure of the dread and you'll wind up either having dreads hanging on by a thread of falling off your scalp. rubber bands will damage and melt into your hair (as it seems you know!), so i'd agree with worldpeace and say throw a bead or two on 'em.

Tear 'em :) Then as Worldpeace said use some beads. Another options is wrapping them with wool, you'll still have to tear, but not half as much!
