Hey all! I have soft curls in bob, shorter in the back. The front is at least to my chin, but it's more like to my nose dry and curled up. I've been no-pooing for a while and doing the curly girl thing - basically just washing with natural conditioner. Obviously, I need to stop the conditioner and do the no-residue shampoo. I don't touch my hair much at all, just scrub the scalp and rinse without running my fingers through my hair and put in a towel to dry. I'm thinking I'll start with some backcombing using my natural curl sections that already happen even with the conditioner. So what do you think of all that, but really should I let my hair grow for a while first? I do *not* want to look like Coolio, but I'm eager to start the journey. Also my nape is pretty short, so I'm thinking I would keep cutting that until the back dreads reach my hair line. Thoughts?
if you dont want to look like coolio (lol) maybe just stop combing and let it grow as it dreads. the natural process doesnt really result in coolio appearance, thats only with back combing and other ways.
yeah, plus it takes long enough that by the time they're finished you'll have 'em long enough to at LEAST look like whoopi. ~_^
Okay after reading more here, I will just go natural, maybe a little palm rolling. I think I'll forget about backcombing. Oh, and my hair is below my mouth not to my nose. lol. I guess I hadn't really looked at it in a while. I've been cutting it myself for a while, and the last time I went too short. If I go totally natural, then my hair should grow enough to be not too short once it starts knotting? I couldn't tell if that last post was joking or not. I'm not going for salon-perfect locks, I just don't want Coolio. I'm not trying to look like Whoopi either.
I think your more likely to have the whole sideshow bob thing going on! If you've got curly hair though defitnely go natural.
mama2q- i have extremely similar hair.... curly, in a bob that's maybe a little longer than yours in the front (curls to my chin) and about 2 inches at the nape of the neck (uncurled). i've been going natural and it's been going really well. i didn't want to backcomb because: it would shorten all of my hair drastically; i wanted to preserve the curly aspect; it would be too sudden of a change (for friends and family); and i am far too lazy to spend time backcombing my awful tangly hair when i want dreads so's i don't have to comb you and i have hair that works really well going natural.... i stopped using conditioner (which i was addicted to) and stopped brushing about 4 weeks ago and i have about 15 dreads started in the back and the rest of my hair is knotting up more everyday (yay!). and i still look curly and presentable (again yay!). that's my 2 cents! good luck with what you choose, though
Thanks, Olwyn! I saw your pics, and that's my hair exactly! Yours looks great knotting up. I think I'll wait for one more month of growth (& to get through my husband's work holiday party. ugh) and then throw out the conditioner and go natural. I'm a conditioner addict too. You have to be for hair like ours to look any kind of normal! I tried no conditioner, no comb, not even running my fingers through it a few days ago, & it was a knotty mess! I'm thinking/hoping mine will knot up quickly like yours. Thanks so much for posting.
