What if anything you put in a film about hippies Should it be set in the 60s? the future? What themes and messages would you focus on? Me I think about what I would put in a movie all the time. I like the idea of a futuristic movie in which hippies literally ruled an entire area like a small country and what their country might look like you know trash tech housing rampant subistance farming but all very desirable. I like to go the route of fantasyland perfect world the wheres the plot huh no problems? Glorified drug trips lot's of sexiness and good music.
Good music, glorified drugtrips and a tad of sexiness for sure . But if it's a hippiemovie I'd mix it with the right amount of moral messages as well. With right amount I mean a subtile message, it doesn't have to rule the movie. Just enough to make you think afterwarths. A movie like Rude awakening had all those things, although the moral message and stuff was a bit too obvious, especially in the end. Didn't really like that (and some other things from that movie neither), but I enjoyed it anyway. Do you know it? It's a very typical hippiemovie: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098230/, far from excellent though, but it has it's moments. I also wouldn't like it to be overproduced, like most hollywood movies. It also doesn't need to look like Easy rider, but just keep it real. And I would take the time in several scenes. Drag it out a bit, let the scenery, views and emotions get to you a bit, like in spaghettiwestern movies. Not all the time though, in the drugtrips I'd use some special effects probably. Can't believe nobody replied here yet, I like the idea of this thread!
i just dont want it to be a caricature....you know, a ridiculous overexaggeration. i would like to see it starting with the Beats and going from there.
Excelent question! My answer would be some footage on what the message was/IS about. Namely: "How can ANYONE ask for world peace when we can't even get along with our own next door neighbors?!?!?!" The message if I made the film would be just that. We need to be both civil and loving to EVERYONE we meet. It has been scientificaly proven that we learn from immitation. (Hell. Even animals do.) If I don't like you JUST because your skin is different from mine, how in the hell can I ask you to like me???????? I don't care what GOD you pray to. (Or even if you pray!) As long as you have acceptance of the fact we are all born HUMAN.
I was just gonna say it's been done in Easy Rider, but recklessrick beat me to the punch. I wanna see the sex, drugs, and rock'n roll, but with some sorta spiritual message you can take with you after the trip, y'know?
i would want somthing that doesnt glorify it, i mean a lot of people who would see a hippie movie like sex drugs and can somwhat relate to some of the cliche things weve heard bout hippies, but what if there was a movie that didnt glorify the 60s or the movement, tragedy, meaning, anger, pride the whole shibang!! but at the same time not over doing it! giving hope and a new outlook on what the whole thing was/is about... but yeah definatly a good trip scene here and there and some good ol music to give all the stoners in the theater a really good time
I find that most films do empashize the tragedy, insanity, and self-destruction that, but not the impact that the collective movement of a past generation has influenced starry-eyed idealistic kids ever since, and how beautiful it could be if that influence were embraced more freely. I think of the peaple I think to be the biggest hippies in the world, people who don't collect money, people who will speak to you positively no matter how whiney and selfdestructive you are being. People setting an example for what it means to accept your humanity and live with it rather than gobble consumptions of some kind to hide from pain and self loathing. People with dirty feet and dirty clothes that aren't trying to steal. It makes me fall in love, which is why I wish to glorify it.
I'd like to see some good examples of how we could be living in a much better world, but I would not like the overall points to be strong and done in a cheesy manner. Just showing a pleasant environment would be fine. There is no need for dramatizing everything to get the meaning across. Some cute guys wouldn't hurt the movie either .
My favourite hippie film is called "A Simple Curve." It doesn't glorify the stereotype or anything, but I think it's a really honest look at it. The cinematography is amazing - the scenery in the Kootenays in BC is beautiful...it's different from most "hippie movies" that you're talking about, but it has so much depth...i don't know. I love it anyway...hahahhah It's about a guy kind of coming of age, living with his hippie father and that kind of community...but struggling with it... no trip scenes though. There's the imdb link... http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0422458/ and the trailer on youtube... http://youtube.com/watch?v=XmLoVJNQUoc
I really liked the trailer...the music and cinematography are wonderful!! Thanks for the heads up...I'll definately check it out!
Zacharia: the Electric Western:It was a hippy film with such people as Country Joe and the Fish, Elvin Jones, and the James Gang,a sort of morality musical type of show and I thought that was where Hip Film was heading, but the Idea was lost in time. I have come to the conclusion that, that time the 60s early 70s it's feelings, it's vibe, can never be brought back. Today it seems we are angrier and we have come from the Beatles "All you need is Love" to some Rapper screaming about "You Crazy Bitch".
Dude, that's just the mainstream! Mainstream music, movies or fashion are always trends. The peace and love theme in the sixties was a trend too, and now the hiphop and gold and bitches stuff is one of the trends. Don't let it piss you off. It's just a temporarily fase.
I disagree, that flick was far from mainstream,it was back then, an underground type of deal, only in certain places was it shown. As for Hiphop, when Pat Boone did what he called a "heavy metal" L.P. that killed metal, I wish he would do a hiphop C.D. Boone is the epitome of uncool. What i was trying to say is we have become totally different in our attitudes and our outlooks on life and it is not a phase it is social evolution.
