Will go kaboom as a supervolcano explodes! One of these days fire and brimestone (sulfur) will rain from the sky after it all explodes. Big devastation will be.

"But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed."

When that eruption happens it will produce enough ash and pumice to bury even New England under a foot of ash.

And volcanic ash isn’t like snow, under a microscope it looks like shards of glass – try breathing that in for a while and see what that does to the lungs [IMG]

i was in eugene when st hellins went. they were telling everybody to stay indoors and passing out dust masks.

does jellystone actually have that particular flavour of magma pool under it?

there are several different kinds, and they don't all work that way.

i think the day will come when there's little trains or something else like that, instead of, or at least not any, cars though.

I simply ask for a quick death.

Though living in Wyoming, I'm sure that won't be too big of a problem.

And what was the bible quote for? I thought at first you were trying to say that the state of Wyoming is like Sodom (in which case I would've had a good time laughing considering how conservative and bible-thumping the people around here are), but now I think you were just illustrating your point...? Or perhaps that if/when Yellowstone does go off, that shall be the day the Second Coming occurs?

ah, but it's precisely the bible thumping conservatives who are most like their own biblical sodomites. not that i place much stock in a literal interpritation of anything.

i guy named lafferty once wrote a story called sodam and gamorah texas. and this was before EITHER bush ever got elected to anything!

    now texas, i can believe.

but it ain't heavin fire and brimstone is raining out of, but the smokestacks of powerplants. and that only because of putting little green pieces of paper ahead of the kind of world we all have to live in.

there are close parallels to the teachings of beliefs certainly, but the main thing people are hiding from themselves with them is that we are doing it ourselves to ourselves, and not by ofending something big and invisible, but directly by what we are doing itself.

revealers of those beleifs may very well however, have seen, or foreseen, that we would be doing so.

Point taken, now that I think about it.

    We're doomed.

(Whether it be from natural causes, our causes, or supernatural causes)

haha, no were not "doomed", not any more then we collectively choose to doom ourselves by our own misplaced priorities.

maybe if you believe them intractable, and that is easy to do, then yes, of course perhapse we would be. but while the dominant culture might be a least common denominator, it is by no means an inevtiable or default condition.

we just can't expect something big friendly and invisible to hand our species its survival on a silver platter because we all, enough of us, aggree to some arbitrary set of unfounded assumptions. no matter how adamantly anyone may claim them to have come somehow from it.

when we sow the use of combustion to generate energy and propell transportation and continue to disproportionately increase our numbers in relation to our environment and other life forms we must share it with, then we are reaping such things as global climate chainge and the as yet less then entirely forseen consiquences of it.

of course the totally unexpected occsionally gets thrown into the game to keep it interesting, but not really that often, and seldom anywhere near as profundly as the reaping and sowing.

yellowstone's volcanoe erupts once every 600,000 years. the last time it erupted was 600,300 years ago. in other words it my very well happen within our lifetimes.

The Yellowstone super-volcano is 43 miles by 18 miles. So if it erupts while you're standing in the middle of it, it will be quite difficult to run away from. Particularly as your legs will have just melted beneath you.

precisely what? is 43 by 18 miles that is being refered to. obviously not an opening in the earth, which is what is usually meant by a volcano. perhapse a particular pool of molton lava, or a hallow heated my molton lava in which ground water seaping in is flash boiled, driving guisers?

is the suggestion that something is going to cause an eruption with a surface area this size? and if so, from how far down are we talking about.

sure the earth's core is still molton, or plastic and hot as the case may be, though this has far less directly to do with surface vulcanism then once thought.

i mean, we can come up with all sorts of spectacular b.s. just to be doing so, but what makes one doing so more or less then another, if you see what i mean?

it's not the ash that falls on the ground from yellowstone that you have to worry about (unless you live in the USA of course) it's the ash that'll stay in the atmosphere blocking out the sunlight for a coupla decades

get ya thermal knickers on, it's gonna (almost) be another ice age

are a handful of pretend certainties, worth more then a probably near infinity, of real possibilities?

we may all be mortal, but while we live, there is a very big universe out there to explore. and when we are gone from this one, there may be others beyond it as well.

wishes can come true, when enough people agree to them. provided they don't also create contrary conditions, through ignorance of the process whereby they create them.

i've never met a demon. but i've met a lot of rocks and trees, in places where i was the only human for a very great distance in every direction.

A perfect example of that (but on a micro scale) was the eruption of the volcano in Iceland earlier this year, which scientists predict will produce a colder than normal summer next year
