I know y'all are probably sick of stupid newbie questions. but theres no such thing as a stupid question apparently So ive been wanting dreads for awhile, but my hair is really super thin and thats the only thing stopping me. my hair is so thin that im afraid it would make me look like im going bald in some places or something. so if any of you dreadies had really think hair id like to see pictures of how your dreads turned out
Don't know if this helps you, but i know a fella who's balding/thinning in places and his got his hair dreaded and it actually makes him seem like he's got a much fuller head of hair. So i don't think it'll be a problem, you might have thinner dreads but i doubt you'll look like you've got bald spots! hehe. Why don't you post some pictures up let us take a look?
Is your hair also super straight? Or no? Just dont brush it for a few weeks - a month. It'll start to cling together and you'll sorta be able to tell how it will progress.
My hair is really thin too. This is my second time having dreads, and I did them naturally, no sectioning at all. I don't seem to have any bald-looking spots at all. My first time having dreads, I sectioned it (randomly, but still sectioned) and I did have a few baldish spots that bothered me. So I suggest, no matter what route you wish to take to get dreads, to start of by letting it section naturally. Your hair will let you know where it wants to dread. I'll post some pictures soon
i have this theory that straight hair takes longer to dread because it has to section itself. curly hair is already sectioned and can just start knotting. it's my theory. i like it. i have really thin hair, too, but i backcombed. i don't have any bald spots or places where it looks too sparse. i think that could potentially change when my ends knot up more, though.
yea her hairs very straight i dont think itsas thin asshethinks tho.. when the length pulls up & knots , by looping it shortens & thickens & will look even more full i think ypu'll have beautiful dreads ) i think that i agree that tryin to go natural would be theway to go..or at least go natural several weeks to a mnth or so & see how its progressing b4 concidering backcombing
i love this thread because i'm in the exact same situation.. i have thin straight hair that knots up like CRAZY naturally on it's own.. and i was hoping for some input as to why natural is the way to go rather than backcombing?
backcombing is an unnesasary step.. backcombing is usualy done by sectioning your hir into clearly defined sections, & really thin hair could ressult in looking like theres spaces between each dread natural though will automaticly section itself wherever it wants to, which will result in some cossed hairs near the roots, as it grows & u start seperating them moe often, the hairsrippedapart at the roots will eventualy form into the nearest drads, or form lil baby dreads between the longer dreads, either way it will fill out those gaps.. if your hair knots like crazy as u say, the sections should start becomming aparent rather quickly & as long as u seperatethesections they should dread up nicely on theyre own also, backcombing is a panful process, thin hair can easily be pushed down into 1 clump near theroots with a fewstrands left over, & wether combing or backcombing your ripping at the hair somewhat..the more agresively as in how u would while backcombing, the more hair hets ripped..resulting in even thinner hair at least that makessence to me
thanks for the advice everyone!! i think im going to go for it and let my hair start dreading naturally. and just like yanqui my hair also knots up like crazy on its own. i will keep yall updated!! hopefully it wont make my hair look even thinner
