Summer Wine at the prom?

Hope this is the right forum to ask this. Can anyone tell me if Summer Wine would have been played at the prom in 1967 / 1968 (if it was a high school in California) and also was there a specific age group it was most popular with (I'm not saying people were sitting around on the beach singing it to a guitar but why not)? I'm trying to find out as much as I can especially how it would have touched people back when it was first released. It's a long story and a very personal issue and since I was born after 1968, I'm counting on your kindness to help me out.
