Dread Update! It's been 4 months, and they are starting to shrink AGAIN! My dreads appear to be on a different schedule than others I've read about, but that's okay. They are super tight since I washed them in orange Palmolive too. I guess there was some residue from the natural soap I was using, so I think I'm going to use Palmolive for a while and see what happens. I still love them, even though I've been less than attentive with the crochet hook lately. Part of it is laziness, but I've noticed a wonderful ease of living since dreading my hair, where small things bother me less, I don't get so angry anymore, and other people's opinions have far less impact on me. A good deal of this is dealing with having white girl dreads in a small town, and part of it is the way I've chosen to deal with life in the past year - either way, they work together somehow. Even though they are fuzzy, I do still get the occasional compliment on them. Before I started reading about the process, I just assumed that fuzzy dreads were not taken care of, but fuzzy dreads have a lot more to do with recent washing and wet weather than I thought! Though I admit I do need to do some crocheting, some days they decide to be poofy, other days they want to be twisty. They really do have their own way of doing things, and it's no use fighting them. Henna serpents: Back of my head:
THey look beautiful! It's the best thing to let dreads have their own personality and schedule and just do their own thing, always works out best methinks. lovley lovley pics!
wow, they are so mature looking to be only 4 months old!! do you use wax or anything on them? I know how you are feeling, living in a small town with dreads. For some reason, you start to see things just a little bit differently. Its nice, really. pretty beads, too.
put away thecrochet hook, & let em do theyre thing pat of the change in how u feel comes from not worrying about the little things that used to bother you right? little unimportant things like a fuzzy dread day your dreads knowwhat theyre doin, & theyre doin it for you, changing u, let em do theyre thing think about it, if u spendthe next 4 months, just not worrying bout a thing..just let the bad days flow by unnoticed..how much anger would ya have left then? how much frustraton? the process of making dreads is..relaxing & letting them happen..stress free all the way...
Belay that. Put away the crochet hook if you want natural freeform dreads. If you like maintained, even locks, then use it. I don't crochet myself, but crocheting makes your locks appear neater without ruining them like wax. I just like messy.
Hummblebee makes all the glass beads I wear, she's awesome. Nope, I didn't use wax on them at all, though a month ago I did use a small amount before I went out one night. It was okay, but I wasn't crazy about the texture after using it. I did a lot of palmrolling and crocheting the first month, but now it's just the occasional tidying up.
Yeah, I'm not too keen on them being too messy. On bad days I wear a hat or a snood (one of the oher great things about dreads is that I've gotten really into crocheting neat things for my head). I'll stick with my crochet hook, I don't obsess over fixing it, it's actually something I do while sitting in the living room listening to music or watching the tube. I did a bit tonight, and turned my ends under. I don't want them to be super perfect, and I'm not wanting them really wild either. I guess just domesticated, but not trained.
you look so beautiful!!! you go woman! you are rock'n dem locks! i know when i started mine i had long hair...almost to my waist and they just kept shrink'n and shrink'n until they were actually off my shoulders...amazing truly! and inside i felt such a release...it feels so good...even when folks are making those underhanded comments...it takes alot not to laugh right in their face...cuz it's all so silly making such a fuss. oh! i meant to tell ya'll about this really good stuff...if you feel the need to put anything in yer locks this is IT. it's called nature's blessing it contains nettle, rosemary, sage, peppermint, thyme, alfalfa, pure virgin olive oil, pure coconut oil, sage oil, rosemary oil, bergamont oil, chlorophyll (from nettle and spinach)...it's great food for yer hairs roots and keeps yer scalp happy. they sell it here and there...but you can find it for less on ebay. love and light family!
