My dr. also pushed me to start my son on solids BEFORE 4 months, and not really knowing any better I gave it a try. He was so not ready. Naturally he was just pushing it all out of his mouth and looking at me like I was crazy, so after a few failed attempts I gave up on it. By 5-6 months he could sit up on his own completely, could stand holding on to something, was babbling and was totally interested in our food. He would get jealous if we didn't feed him when we were eating. So I started trying again with some applesauce and he loved it. He had always been a chunky baby, he never needed solids pushed on him that young. Actually my doctor told me to give him solids (specifically cereal *yuck*) so that he would drink less milk because he was *too big* for his age. *sigh* And if he hadn't showed such interest and readiness for solids I would still just be giving him milk....because it's really not necessary. I waited untill he really wanted it. I've read a million times that solids during the first year are really only for experimenting with textures, flavors, chewing etc... not for nutrition. A baby will still be getting almost everything they need through breastmilk or formula. So there should be no worries. I think that most babies know what their needs are and if they're not ready for solids they'll let you know. And if they are ready, you will know it. A mama knows her baby best, for sure.
