i just needed to moan. my throat is killing me, it was a bit tender a few weeks ago, but that cleared up fast on it's own. now my tonsils are huge and it hurts badly, earlier today it was ok, not hurting too much but as the night drags on it's horrible. last time i went to a doc with similar symptoms i was told that i needed to just gargle salt water as it was viral and there was nothing that could be done. and well i keep checking for strep now (have had that loads when i was younger) but no signs of it, so i'm gargling warm salt water and sucking on Lockets and just hoping it will go away soon. anyone have any tips they find that helps soothe an ailing throat? it's really making me feel miserable at the moment. i've resorted to trying ibuprophen to see if that will make the swelling of the tonsils retreat, and well it did help this morning to make them less stingy, but this evening doesn't seem to be enough. at this point, i welcome any over the counter advice, be it a fave medicine that seems to do the trick, or honey and lemon. i've also been taking echniacea for a few weeks now, since the first twinge of a sore throat, but so far that isn't helping. *grumbles* i'm just in general feeling a bit rubbish at the moment.
When I have a heavy cold or sore throat I like to treat myself to a hot toddy - basically your hot lemon and honey with added whisky and optionally a few cloves. COuldn't say if it has any curative powers but at least it cheers me up. Hope you get well in time for your birthday.
There's something going around like. We've all had it, currently in the grip of one myself. Hot lemony drinks are helping me definitely. Peppermint tea's pretty good too, clears up the nasal blockage and helps perspiration. Sweat can be a pain when you're sleeping though - I generally find I wake up soaking unless I take a couple of paracetamols, that seems to do the trick.
Olbas Pastilles are great - clears the nose and helps sore throats. Awesome things. Eat loads of fresh fruit, take some Vitamin C supplements. Oh, and get some brandy or mulled wine down your neck - cheer you up!
he he ... all you lushs out there suggesting alcohol. ha ha! thanks for the tips. i have been trying to keep my vitamin c up, i wish i'd read these posts before i went to the shop now, but i've only just come online. i did get these STRONGER more powerful lozenges however that the chemist recommended, they seem to have numbed the pain and apparently have anesthetic and anti-bacterial meds in them so it numbs while trying to kill infections. i have honey in the house, but no lemon. i have chamomille tea, maybe that would be relaxing, though i've heard you shouldn't drink hot tea when you have a sore throat, but well it might make me feel better. and thanks, roffa, i hope i am better by Wednesday too. though if turn 30 while ill, maybe that will be some omen that the next decade will go well? (i can hope right). mama haze ... i did eat a load of jalapenos the other day on some cheesy tortilla chips, i think they have capcasin, don't they? can't say it helped my throat though. i'm not having sinus problems, just throat. which means things like buttercup and such are a bit pointless too. thus why the chemist recommended those super powerful lozenges. only 1 and half hours till i can have another though.
Put the honey in the fridge and have a few neat spoonfuls of it, I often wake up with a sore throat, and this soothes it.
yeah, we aren't supposed to get ill till AFTER the birthday. i feel much better now however. those lozenges i got worked miracles. still a bit scratchy, but all the swelling has gone down. i just turn into an utter baby when i'm not feeling well. and i'd been struggling with a sore throat for a few days and at my peak of frustration. next time, i'll turn right to the high-powered lozenges.
Avoid eating crisps and any dry foods. Take echinacea three times a day and give a week break for each month. So take two weeks per month. Vit c and Vit d. Lemons, oranges and kiwis are rich in vitimins. additional: I went to the doctor once and said I felt like a pack of cards. He said take a seat and I will deal with you later. Just something that will make what ails you a bit more bareable. Wheeze of the week.
he he that made me chuckle, john. um, the echinacea tablets i have say to only take 2 tabs one time a day. throat has gone back to being a bit itchy and annoying so popping lozenges a bit again, not like clockwork though. tis that time of year to get all sorts of icky bugs though.
Echinacea is best taken before Winter sets in. I have been near alot of spluttering, sniffling, runny-eyed and nosed people, including my mum who has the flu. Yet I have been okey. Had something last night. Immune system must have got rid of it over night. Blessed is thy body that can defend itself against illness. I remember having a severe sore throat. I felt like I swallowed a cactus. I could hardly talk and my voice was just a whisper.
I have the worst cold!! I feel like I am dying! No-one has ever had a cold like this! Oh my god............... I'm a man!!!
Having a cold is a thing of the past for me. I know perhaps I will get one, like we all do. But because I have taken Echinacea for three months before the winter drama. I am a lean mean cold fighting machine. My immune system is fighting the bugs. The best thing you can do is get bed rest, let a few windows open. Have a bath daily or a shower. Drinking lemsip, drinking lemon and honey. paracetomals. Don't take anti biotics for a cold. Get a hot water bottle. I have one which has a nice fluffy badger coat on it. I even have pink bunny slippers under the bed. Radiators are bastards at spreading the germ population. Now you are in bed, perhaps the best thing that can take your mind off a cold is the Radio. Tune into BBC7 for plays and stories. Or listen to Talksport and five live after ten pm. They have topical debates which you can phone in to. Eat well, drink loads of fresh mineral water. Try Evian and have marmite sandwiches and plenty of tomatoe soup with mashed potatoes. additional: Remember you have a cold. Most colds last a week. You aint terminal......yet
Thanks John! I am in bed but cannot rest, I have to find a flat quickly and the hunt is going terribly bad! And I keep emailing people, then getting stressed at no response! I very rarely feel bad, so I do tend to milk it when it happens! Not terminal yet........... but very close
