Happy Thanksgiving! I just wanted to tantalize you and your munchie cravings with some of the food I'll be making starting tomorrow. :)

Pumpkin pie bars, pumpkin pie, tiramisu trifle, porcini and sausage stuffing, sweet potato casserole, turnips, mashed potatos, turkey of course, gravy made from the turkey drippings, corn, fresh dinner rolls. Oh yea and I'm making this chili cheese dip, and this crock pot dip made with cream cheese, deli corned beef, swiss cheese, and sauerkraut.

I'll be making half of the food at my house, and the other half at my parent's house on Thanksgiving day. I just can't wait. This is something I look forward to all year. :)

Hope you have a great holiday too.

That sucks. :( I feel bad... I wish you could come over my house. You guys should go get a free turkey at a food shelf or something. To eat after you get stoned. :) Just put it in the oven and go back to bed.

    all sorts of potential reasons.

if i didnt live in the same town as my parents, i might not be able to make it for thanksgiving. in which case depending on my funds, i may or may not end up having a nice dinner.

it might be whatevers around...and hey, porkchops are delicious, they are relatively easy to prepare in a number of different ways, and they're cheap.

if i was having dinner alone or just not a huge dinner, theres no way i could personally afford a turkey. turkey is pricey....i might be able to splurge and buy a rotisserie chicken or something....

    but....

thanksgiving is apparently supposed to be about being thankful....so be thankful about having someone to foot the bill for the extravegant meal you'll be preparing and gorging yourself on. some people aren't going to have the opportunity to do that this year, for whatever reason.

i'm lucky, too...my parents will be making dinner and i'll have turkey and casserole and mashed potatoes and wine and maybe some dessert this year, but its not going to be a "normal" thanksgiving and it will be an evening dinner rather than a mid-day dinner....they decided to do it later in the day since i'm poor and couldnt stand to give up a shift at work when i'll be paid time and a half.

but if they hadnt decided to wait and have dinner with me, the best thanksgiving dinner i'd be looking at having would be whatever i could afford and make for myself or else left overs from someone elses thanksgiving dinner.

on a regular basis, most of my meals are simple and cheap. rice and beans is a good one. lentils are versatile. a lot of fast food places around here have items on a "dollar menu" so one or two burgers and a small order of fries will fill you up for just a couple bucks....

edit: oops, more posts have been made since i started this. sorry

for sure, they're damn tasty and usually less than ten bucks. in fact, if i'm feeling a little wealthy on payday (black friday...i'll be working in the mall that day for just under 6 hours, so i'll be fucking SWAMPED and not even have a lunch break...i'll be dead tired after work) i might just go pick up an already cooked chicken from the deli at kroger or something, and a box of wild rice or something so i can have chicken and rice....

mmm....actually that doesnt sound bad at all! still a bit beyond my budget for a regular basis, but maybe i'll try that soon......

btw man, if you have any change laying around, i'd advise against going to a grocery to use the coin machines that charge to turn your coins into bills....

national city banks, or at least the two i know of in the ville (one by lucky house on shrock road east of state street, and one off of morse road near the meijer) have free coin machines that dont charge at all! not a cent! you dont even have to bank with them or anything. i go with us bank, myself, and i went in to national city with a cigar box full of coins the other day and walked out with almost 40 dollars.

of course i spent it foolishly and quickly, as it was money i didnt really "expect" to have...whenever i do that it feels like i've suddenly gotten a lot of money i didnt have before and i can do whatever i want with it.

i was dumb enough to spend 15 bucks of it on a big 22oz bottle of fucking phenomenal belgian beer that came with a really nice glass for it....

it was good...but damn....that same amount would have lasted me soo much longer if i'd bought olde english instead :p

    oh well

I eat pork chops for dinner maybe once a week because they are cheap and easy to prepare, but they just aren't that good.

O man, im so exctied for thanksgiving. My dads cousin married this guys whos a chef. Like a really really good one. He created the menus for PF Changs, Jamba Juice, and a bunch of other places. He also owns a bunch of reasturants out in Calif. Anyway, I get to have thanksgiving with that side of the family for the first time this year, and I am so god damn excited to eat the food that he makes. Not to mention, he has the cutest little son ever, this 3 year old with a mohawk, who I havent seen in a year, so im really exctied to see him. Unfortuanettly, I cant get high for this awsome meal though...i just couldent do that to my family.

I understand that! My mom's best friend, and my daughter's godmother is vegan. SO I have to make either a quorn roast or a tofurky and some special sides.

    i dunno, i like em a lot.

let them soak in some beer with fresh garlic, salt, pepper, cumin, a little chili powder, and maybe a little chicken stock or something if you have it for a couple hours. paprika would be good, too.

then broil the chops till their cooked halfway through.

remove from the oven, cut into small pieces, and put in a saucepan on the stove. add a cut up onion, more garlic, and a jar of great northern beans. add a tiny bit of water and cook until the pork is done all the way through. keep adding small quantities of water as needed to prevent it from cooking dry and burning, but try to avoid any excessive liquid once the food is done cooking. the liquid present will take on flavor and nutritional value from the other ingredients, and i always think its a shame to drain off much liquid once a dish is done cooking.....anyways, this makes frikkin awesome pork and beans, and like chilli is even better if you let it sit, covered, in the fridge for a day or two before eating.

get some rice and some fresh broccoli, and you've got a pretty damn nice meal....

for me i can get porkchops cheap at a discount grocery here...a pack of three or four for less than 5 bucks. when i made this i only used 2 chops, made the other for a sandwhich.

the jar of beans was like 2 bucks. onion less than a dollar. used seasonings i already had at home.

rice is dirt cheap, and broccoli isnt too pricey, either.

i got four meals for myself from the pork and beans, so its safe to say that if you add in the rice and some veggies, you could feed four people with this for under ten bucks.

at least in my area. i hear food and all other necessities of life cost more in other parts of the country, like in new york and california. cost of living is pretty reasonable where deadhead and i are from....but then to offset it, many people are also paid less....i make less than 10 dollars an hour :(

thats good luck right there! i love food and everything about it, it just costs too much....

i love cooking it, love eating it, love reading about it, talking about it, love cookbooks, cooking shows, finding recipes online sometimes, making up my own....

but hell, i've not got any training and no intentions to go to culinary school, and i haven't got any experience in a proper restaraunt, just coffee shop, ice cream shop, pizza shop....meh....

but theres no harm in having dreams that you have no illusion of ever realizing....i'd like to be a world famous chef or some brilliant scientist of holy man or something....but none of those will happen for me. its funny, kids always seem to want to grow up to be rockstars of athletes or something. i wanted to be smart or wise or just cook some damn good food haha

Mmm that sounds pretty good. I made some on sunday night cause i bought this package of 4 thin chops for seriously 1.98 I couldn't believe it! i browned them, and then put them on top of scalloped potatos and topped them with crushed cracker crumbs, and shredded cheddar cheese. It was pretty tasty.

Hey I didn't realize you loved food so much? That's awesome.. I'm a total foodie too, but cooking is my drive in life. :)

And how do you know that stuff won't happen to you? Anything can happen!

nah, i'm going to school for social work type stuff, and its unlikely any of those things will happen because i'm not pursueing them and have no STRONG desire to. people say you can do anything with enough drive and motivation, but it also takes aptitude, opportunity, and chance. people are a bit arrogant in thinking they can do WHATEVER they want just by working hard. plenty of people who have vast potential will be stuck in the lowest rungs of society due to circumstances, and plenty of idiots will likewise also rise to the top due to circumstances. it doesnt look so far like either of these will happen to me, but i'm certain the least likely is to rise up to be something widely recognized as great.

i'll be content with passing through life with enough money to get by and pay the bills and eat and get medicine without worrying too much about the cost. thats my attainable, realistically lofty goal. nothing big....get a good job that i dont hate, listen to music, watch the programs and movies i like, eat good food, drink good beer....smoke some pot...just enjoy life.

i dream about being a world class chef, but wouldnt be able to tolerate such a stressful lifestyle, and wouldnt like the in-between stages of having to work my way up in the business from "lower" positions....

i deam about being a scientist on the cutting edge of my field (physics, chemistry, theoretical stuff, hell, even geography and astronomy are fascinating to me) but i really hate math and dont have good enough grades to get into the top-notch universities one would need to get opportunities to get jobs good enough to eventually, maybe someday down the road lead you to some really amazing stuff. and as much as the sciences fascinate me, i'm not so good with math.

as for a spiritual leader/holy man, heh....not at all qualified, and i dont have a strong faith and dont belong to any religion :p

i'd also like to be a mathemetician, but like i said, i'm no good at math.
i'd like to be a concert pianist or cellist, but never plaid the piano in my life (though as a child i did well at clarinet, its way different and i havent played anything in years)
i'd like to be good with languages...i can named tons that i'd like to learn, several of them dead, and i've got good reasons for wanting to know each of them....

but i barely even passed a single spanish course in highschool, and i took a SINGLE day of french in college before dropping the class...i'd never felt so stupid in my life as the teacher made me feel....

so, i dunno. i have lots of dreams, lots of aspirations, but try to distinguish between which are practical or possible for me to pursue and which will just always be pipe dreams....wondering how life would be different....

i'd be fine just getting by with a nice home, enjoyable job with which to pay the bills and eat well, maybe a wife or girlfriend someday....these are more attainable, more realistic things i can work towards. anything beyond that and i'll consider myself one of the luckiest people in the world.....so few are so blessed, and so few of those who ARE that blessed seem to realize how good they have it.

Mmm thanksgiving... Some nice times spent with the family hopefully. I don't plan to smoke until then, so my tolerance will be minus one week. After dinner I shall smoke a couple bongs with my sister (NICE weed from honduras) and then we'll probably just sit around and catch up on old times until late in the night. Ah the joys of living life....
