Elegance vs Fashion Wearing the right thing, having the right look and trying to fit in is all part of the lifestyle of most modern women. We constantly get different answers on what look is in, and there is a constant competition to have the "latest" fashion accessory and be ‘in the know’ about the future of fashion to be ahead of the game. Why do fashions change all the time? Why should leather be in fashion one season and faux fur the next? Why do people follow fashion and buy the latest must have when they have enough clothes already? What’s hot and what’s not? Do we ever really know? And is there a way of keeping up with fashion without blowing our hard earned salaries on the high street? You see, the problem with fashion is that most women look at their wardrobe and see a choice: follow the fashion and have an ever changing collection of clothes and styles and an ever dwindling bank balance, or give up all together and wear what looks okay even if you are dressed in that trusty coat you bought when you were a student that’s 2 sizes too big now and is frayed at the hem. Whatever happened to people owning timeless pieces that embraced longevity? Look at the fashions over the last 10 years. How many of those must have pieces are throw backs from a fashion past that spans decades? A fashion past full of trends that would normally cause a raised eyebrow of disdain…until a fashion house launches a collection that recognises and encompasses these fashions and reproduces some of these timeless pieces. Think about it, how many times have you heard your mother say she used to have a dress just like the one you’ve been coveting when she was your age? If only she had kept a few key items and not moved on with the constant changing fashion, disposing of anything that wasn’t in vogue. From my earliest childhood memories I can remember a fascination with women who were well dressed and fashionable. As I grew up I tried to emulate these women, and actually just gained an unhealthy obsession with clothes and fashion, buying clothes and accessories until my wardrobe, groaning under the strain, finally gave up the ghost and I invested in hanging rails that I jammed into my spare bedroom full of pieces I didn’t wear from one year to the next. My penchant for quantity jaded my judgement on the quality of my wardrobe. The final decision about what to buy, or whether to buy anything at all, belongs to you. Ultimately, fashions change because many people like new and different styles, but if these ‘new and different styles’ are just reproductions of the past then why do we spend all our hard earned cash on owning them? The answer, empty your mind, and your wardrobe of unnecessary clutter, focus on the quality of pieces not the quantity, fixate on the timeless pieces, ones that are well made and can be worn from one year to the next, with style and elegance, and most of all ones that suit you.
i removed the little piece of spam in this post, but thought the overall message was an interesting one, based on materialism and the industry creating a need where there really shouldn't be one.
I don't follow fashion. Example: today I have on a rainbow stripey cardigan, blue vest top over a long sleeved top, blue flowery skirt, black tights, rainbow laced boots. Sounds like a mish mash, but really it works! Or maybe it's just a hippie thing...
i wouldn't know how to be fashionable if the fashion police burned my wardrobe and gave me pictures. i pick out one or two things i like to update my wardrobe, replace old things that have faded or frayed beyond repair. but i buy cheap. i lose interest in stuff quickly, and my weight fluctuates by quite a lot.
I never think about it, I just buy what I like and wear it as I like to wear it. My only rule is that it has to be comfy, if not Im not wearing it, no matter how pretty it is. I think the way I dress, it's pretty basic stuff with a fun/funky twist. Like today I have on black flat boots, purple courdory pants, a black sweater, a pinkish headband, on the daytime I had my super huge retro sunglasses, I love them, they are white and red and that's it. I like colors and that's basically it.
it's really silly that you wake up, turn on the news, and they're talking about "latest fashions" and crap like that. pfft. WTF?
I have two things in my wardrobe that are older then me - they are about 33 yo - I wear them rarely, but they were never out of place, they are just timeless and no one else has anything alike. One - is a classic brown sued jacket and another thing is very light sweater with an unusual ornament. They belonged to my mother. She bought the jacket in Romania and the sweater she received as a wedding gift from her mother in law. Nowadays I cannot find clothers that will last that long b/c of their quality, even classic and expensive things lose their shape, color or just fall apart. Industry has no interest in making them long-lasting. It's about business and money now.
Screw fashion!!! If there is anything that makes me very angry, it would be the fashion industry and people making fun of others because they don't look like the latest fashion perscribes... If there wouldn't be fashion all would be much more colourfuland diverse. People wouldn't be ashamed of wearing what they like. If other people thibk you look bad in something but you like it, then screw them!
There's trendy, and there's timeless. I personally love clothing and style I like to experiment with it, but I am usually a gypsy. But fashion has no business being news or being taken seriously
"Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable we must change it every 6 months" Oscar Wilde. My fave quote. Cracks me up i find that fashion is gorgous but everyone makes too much of a deal of it. It shouldnt matter what you're wearing. Although if it was not for fashion i wouldnt have the best hat in the world... GO INDIVIDUALITY!!!!
Yeah sure, designing clothes is cool I guess, but why is it taken this far? I mean geesz let everyone wear whatever they want the world wil look so much better! Imagine a world without fashion... maybe even without off-the-rack clothing That would mean everybody would buy custom made by a tailor or make stuff theirselves and wear whatever they want
I don't buy clothes that are "trendy" or "fashionable." I get clothes that fit well and look nice on me. Clothes that fit well will never go out of style. Peace and love
If I wore what was fashionable right now people would confuse me with a prostitute.. Those skirts are no longer than the usual belt, for god's sake! Even kids look like whores these days if they would wear what they sell at the stores in my home city.
I go with trends that Im into like if i think its comfy or my style, but there is a lot of trends I dont like, but to each his own...if fashion makes people fufilled then who am I to knock their bliss. and then I have typical "teacher clothes" to wear to observe and student teach they are kinda lame.
I wear anything I like and although I get a little bit of stick for it, I get a few compliments sometimes, I'm officially the most colourful person in the year with my rainbow hoodie!
I like colourful stuff too^^ but I look different every month, because I dont know what I want typical spacechive stuff is really weird trousers with bright colours or wich have been painted on. I also like corsettops and patchwork vests/sweaters with the colours of the rainbow- and I have this long hat wich comes down to my butt XD its purple and has a plume on the end
