Hey, I've had my hair long for about 6 years now, and been thinking of getting dreads for even longer! Anyway I've finally made the decision today. I've been trying the wool rubbing method as it seemed easy, cheap and natural. My hair is really thick and curly, and has been dying to dread itself since it's been long anyway... and I never liked the way it looked when I tried to comb it or straighten it anyway. So far I'm pretty pleased with the results, although I realise it's going to be a long long process - already it seems to be forming into thin-ish matted strands, particularly at the back. Looks cool if I shake my head around lol.. Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone has any tips. I know to use shampoo without any residues/chemicals/conditioner type things... I've seen a lot of references to palm-rolling but I'm not totally clear what that involves or when to do it. Sorry for all the silly newbie questions, and thanks in advance for any help! Dan
In all seriousness, I know when you're just starting you're scared to fuck up or whatever, but YOU CANT FUCK IT UP. Do whatever you want, it wont make that much of a difference. Just forget about your hair unless you're washing or ripping. Palm roll if you want. Crochet if you want. Backcomb if you want. No matter what, you'll have dreads in 1.5 years. Just dont wax.
palm rolling is exactly as it sounds. Put dread between palms.. and roll. It helps to shape and tighten existing dreads
i wouldn't palm roll... sounds like you have the same texture hair as me and pall rolling only seems to loosen the knots and damage/break the hair... thats just me though
Cool, thanks for the advice - the wool rubbing trick seems to be working pretty nicely so far. Will get some pics up tomorrow if I can. Dan
just a notice, your hair will start to shrink in a few months when your dreads start sucking up all available hair on your head. it kind of freaked me out when it started happening, so it's helpful to know that phase is coming.
Yo here's some pics, not great ones but you can see the dreads starting to form, particularly at the back...
They are definatley getting there, they will look better and better as the weeks and months go by Do it the way you want, I think that is the key, that way you should always feel proud and happy about them.
oh... wow dude. You don't need to wool rub anymore, just let it go from there. Your hair type = 6 months it'll be fully dreaded, 9 months tops. wool rubbing weakens the hair if done too much anyway... just let it do it's thing.
wow that is impressive. i am so jealous of your hair dude. youre going to have amazing dreadies! keep up with the pics, i wanna see them evolve
Thanks, I'll definitely keep up with the pics You have nothing to be jealous about though, your hair is beautiful too!
Some badly-taken pics at 1 week... They're still mostly at the back, which is hard to take pics of! Think I'll post another update after 1 month, unless anything interesting happens before then!
