Xavier has had a horrible rash on him bum for days now, and I can't get rid of it. We were using this no name brand penaten cream, and it got worse, so I went out and bought the real stuff. That stuff always cleared Lea Lea's rashes within an hour. Still no improovement. I then thought that maybe he was reacting with a similar ingredient in the 2 creams, so I just tried plain vasaline for a few hours, and after seeing his bum get even worse, I went back to caking on the penaten cream, which seemed to help it a little, but not much. I'm not sure what to do...it looks soooooooo painful. I have been trying to keep on top of every time he messes himself, but he does it so much I miss it once and a while. He poops at least 8 times a day, and pees way more, so it's a lot. I have been trying to keep him as clean as possible, and nada. Nothing is helping this. I'm going to let him lay out on a blanket with a protector thing under him with his bum bare if I can get him to hang out by himself for a minute....(he gets grumpy if I'm not holding him or he's not suckin on my boob lol) Anyone else know ANYTHING that could help him? It looks soooooo painful!
Calendula homeopathic cream, in a non-petroleum base. Vaselin and other petroleum products dont let the skin breathe. And keeping his bum bare as much as possible. I'd always keep my shirt off, wear old pants, and cover my stomach with a cloth diaper and keep M bare bummed even when I held her. That helped. Maybe also look into only wiping him with cloth and water? Maybe chemicals in the wipes are making him break out.
I'm going to definately try that barebum thing, holly. It's so bad it's bleeding now...it makes me want to cry. I'm wondering if it's something in his diapers...we can't use cloth here, since we live in an apartment and we're not allowed to wash diapers in the machines because they're for everyone.
ok, then cheat....use the flannel receiving blankets folded in thirds and keep him bare on one of those. You can boil cloth diapers if you can't wash them in a machine. I wouldn't recommend doing lots that way, but it will give you the option of keeping a dozen or so around.
It could be an allergic reaction to either the cream you're using or something you're eating. Are you eating a lot of dairy or citrus? Did you think it may be yeast? Have him go bare bum (or as my son says, bald-booty nekkid ) Soak his booty in the tub with some baking soda thrown in. I love the calendula cream for baby's skin.
What does the rash look like? Just red and inflamed or little bumps? The bleeding makes me think it's yeast. OT: is there a diaper service you could use if you want to switch to cloth? Then, you wouldn't have to wash them....
it seems to change every time i change his bum...for the most part, it's really red and and has little bumps. The other day it was the bumps that started to bleed. It hasn't bled since, but it still worries me that it did that one time. Are there any other signs that it could be yeast? He does have a little bit of white at the back of his tounge, but I read that a little bit of white is normal... As for diet...I drink a glass of milk at supper and have some in my cerial in the morning. Citrus...not much really at all except for the odd christmas orange once and a while. Now his umbellical cord is bleeding, too. This is really scarring me. The stump fell off a week ago, but it's had little amounts of green around the edge the last couple days, and now today it's bleeding. I'm calling the health nurse, and I wonder if I should bring him in to see my midwife (they do all the primary baby care for the first 6 weeks)
It's been a while since I've changed a diaper, but the bumps are probably a sign of yeast. Eat plain yogurt and drink cranberry juice (unsweentened). Garlic is good too. I'm not sure if acidophilus can be used on such a young one, but it is the bacteria in yogurt which helps tremendously. There is prescription nystatin, but I feel it's being used so much, a lot of yeasts are becoming resisitant. ETA: info on acidophilus: Newborns and Infants (0 to 1 year) Liquid preparations may be used as a lotion and applied topically to diaper area for yeast infections and diaper rashes. If the child is on antibiotic therapy, ¼ tsp or ¼ capsule can be taken orally 2 hours after each dose of antibiotics to replace beneficial bacteria. Add ¼ tsp or ¼ capsule to water for the treatment of oral infections.
Still bad. I tried using just plain water and wash cloths, and still, it didn't help. Leaving his daiper off hasn't done much, either. I don't know what's up with this little guy. I reallt need to get into see my midwife, but I still have to wait a few days to get in. Thanks for asking, though
I don't know what cream you've tried, but my mom always used one called "butt paste", she says that worked miracles. Also something called "triple paste", which is OTC but you have to ask the pharmicist for it for whatever reason. Hope his bum gets better.
I know this isn't really a natural approach, but I use Balmex (safe with cloth diapers) on my baby's bum when she has a rash. I also sprinkle corn starch. I personally would be extremely upset if I wasn't able to use cloth diapers and try to find a way to do it, maybe a diaper service? My son had a constant diaper rash most of his disposable diaper days and using sposies was my big regret with him. Good luck, I hope he feels better.
