Heya... For what's actually YEARS ago now...I used to play a bit of guitar. And I loved it so so much!! Then cos of other stuff that happend in my life, it got forgotten. . But now, I have a bad urge to need to play again! I gotta acoustic, but it's f**ked up now and so it'd be easier if I just buy a cheap second hand one. If any you guys out there can let me know of cheap but good guitar makes to look out for, I'd be very grateful! Or even just good guitar makes! Big big help! Thanks! Marie-Clare xxx
epiphone and squire are generally the best cheap guitars around epiphone is made by gibson, its just got cheap gibson parts on it, but the epiphone SG still sounds fucking amazing! squire is the same, its made by fender, just with cheaper parts as for accoustics, just try some out for size, just dont get one from a cataloge or something, goto a music shop, i mean i picked up my first electric guitar, which was a tanglewood jetstream electric, in a sale for like £60 so cant complain!
I'd advise against squire. While some are good, the chances that you'll find a good one are about 1 in 12. You better play the guitar quite a bit if you plan on buying it(squire). A fender strat/tele standard is 300, which really is'nt that bad a price. edit:I just realized this was the UK forum. You're probably going to be paying insane prices for american crap. Try to find an american friend who will buy and ship it over to you.
Cheers Spyder! V.helpful. I decided i'm gonna at least try out another guitar shop to see if they can fix my broken acoustic, if not i'll look out for an old second hand one just to get me started again before i leave. Marie-Clare xxx
Apart from Epiphone I'd recommend Aria, Hagstrom, Vintage or maybe Marlin and if you wanted a good practise amp Marshall or Rhino some Fender amps are good and Laney they're good as well it depends what your price range is I suppose. not really no, but i have a mate who drives trains on the pier, and bizzarely he's filled my head with facts about southend... infact i have a southend pier poster...and i've never been there in my life!
I used to be an apprentice to a guitar technician... plus I've been an amatuer luthier for about a year... built two or three guitars... do not buy epiphone, do not buy squier... please go to http://www.rondomusic.com It may forward you to their new website... anyway, look at SX guitars and Agile... also, you might want to go to HarmonyCentral.com and look them up in the reviews and if you have any doubts about them, get an account and ask about them there... they are the talk of the guitar world... they are about $300-$400 for them... and they are said to be as good as gibson for a fifth of Gibson's price. They are the best deal on the market and Rondo Music is the only dealer for them as far as I know... I'm sure it would be worth import tax, which wouldn't be too bad, to get one if you can afford to get one... because otherwise you're going to be overcharged buying an Epiphone when these are on the market. Just take my word for it... they're as good as a Gibson and then some.... the SX acoustics are almost as good as Taylors... they even make a Taylor copy... and they are only $100... I think their last shipment sold out.. a guy I know on Harmony Central snatched the last three they had (He's a luthier and has built guitars for years... he bought one for his friend's daughter... and I think two for himself)...
Oh, and the SX Fender Strat copy is made of three piece alder as opposed to the five piece poplar body the standard MIM (mexican) strats are made of now.... so they are even better than fender's crap for less the money.... the agiles are $200-$400... and they have better woods than Gibson uses... the electronics are great stock... only difference is that the cutaway is a bit more rounded, the headstock logo, and the headstock shape... other than that... just as goo as Gibson... and they said only a Gibson was good enough
I've got a Vintage VRS100 (a replica of the much more expensive Paul Reed Smith Custom 24) which is a very good guitar and cost me only £185. If you get it I'd advise you not to use the tremolo though, it putes the strings out of tune really easily, and the pickups could be better but I'll get some new ones soon. If you're on a budget I'd recommend something by Vintage because they make very affordable high quality guitars which, if you look on a lot of guitar review sites, generally have 4 out of 5 and 5 out of 5 ratings. For an acoustic, I'd say just try out as many as you can and determine that way which one you like the sound and feel of. There are a lot of cheap, good acoustic guitars around now. The Yamah F310 has won several awards including best folk guitar, and it's only £90 to buy brand new. I might buy it myself actually.
