I live in south GA and am also open to the idea. Ideally, I would like to go backpacking for an extended period of time (hopefully the Appalachian trail). My dream, though, is to go into the woods in Colorado or somewhere like that, build a log cabin, and live off the land. It would be such a life-changing experience!

I want to know where to research more about that type of stuff, though. I've read a lot, but don't feel like I've learned anything. I've been camping millions of times, but feel like I should know more about the natural plants that cure conditions, and stuff like that. I want to truly learn to survive!

Someone should start a survival school where you learn to build your own log cabin, fish, hunt, and live off the land! Also they should incorporate the plant life that's edible and the ones that help bruises and sicknesses.

Living out in the wilderness has also been a dream of mine for many years now..
I am actually going on a month long back packing trip very soon through-out the
John Muir Trails in California. It should be a blast!

Anyhow, withintheoutside, those websites are GREAT! Thanks a bunch, and funny you mention Tom, as I just found out about him this week. Randomly picked up his "The Vision" work. Very cool!

ahhh yes the WILDERNESS! i dont want to take the wind out of your sails, but i would suggest that before you even attemptt a wilderness tripp find a place close to home were you wont be botherd for a few days and sit by yourself, with just the basics, it sounds all fun but i will tell you very, very few can do it! learn trapping skills, it is your best means of acuiering food, hunting, fishing will use more calories than bringing in,learn witch typ of grubs, insects, DIRT, are best! the old saying, no man is an island still holds true for all but the most determind!

yeah man, I have his wilderness survival guide on my desk with me now, I just recommended it to someone asking about edible wild plants a few hours back.
Great book, added more skills to what I already know.
    Peace

I have written about this so many times now on so many different websites that it’s getting hard to communicate! Think I’ll just copy/paste…

Ever since I was a child, I wanted to live in the woods. I think I was first inspired by Grizzly Adams on TV…but whatever the reason, the thought has always been there.

What I have been longing for is a life out of the societal norm…where there is no use for money, only hard work. I recently saw the film, “Into The Wild” and can’t get it out of my mind. That has been my dream for so long now. I would love to go and do the same thing, though hopefully not with the same ending.

I have hitchiked, learned carpentry and built a small house single-handedly, learned how grow plants from both seed and propagation, fished, and developed a good sense of problem-solving…

My only fear in leaving society is a fear of the pain of lonliness that I might feel after months or even years of solitude. I’m afraid of going stark crazy mad out there alone. Yet, my biggest fear is not of trying and failing—but of never trying at all.

This makes me wonder if there is anyone else out there who would like to do this journey, into the wild as well? I don’t take this lightly…this is a great desire of mine and one I’m sure I’ll live out. I think Alaska would be the place, not being a land-owner. It’s remote enough that I think you could really pull it off without ever being noticed.

If I sound like yourself, or you know of someone, a group, or a WEBSITE for those who also share my vision, please post and let me know. I can’t tell you how appreciative I would be.

    Thanks for reading…God bless!

    John

Hi everyone I to have the dream of ultimately living far in the bush. I read through the post and to try and help with some info; here in Ontario the crown land policy is puplic land use for 21 days in any one place on crown land then you are suppose to move areas. I know of several people who stay much longer than this and are never bothered. Myself I have aquired all the equipment for the big move over the year and going to make a trial run starting this summer; a friend of mine with a 100 acres of land which backs on to a lake is letting me build a cabin and use his land to meet my needs(hunting, gardening, firewood, etc). I have always loved the bush but years ago I saw Alone in the Wilderness about Dick Prenokee in Alaska and I knew one day this was to be my destiny; with the exception of a little more contact with people or parteners in a joint project(so to speak). If anyone has interest or questions please post as I am more than happy to talk. Be safe evryone!

I've thought plenty about not having done this, and how much better it would probably be if I had the experience to learn what I don't know first. Of course, to build a cabin anywhere other than the deepest woods requires permission from the land owner. Sounds like you have that covered...

I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to join you in this. I'd like to hear more about your plans. You can contact me at inhydepark at yaw who dot com.

    Peace and happiness...

Sounds great, KDB. I'll be looking forward to it.

For everyone--here's another website exclusively for those who want to escape society, and meet other who do too. It's brand new but I think it will prove to be very useful!

My husband and I would love to do something like this. We are nudists, so it would be nice somewhere like the jungle where it's most always warm. Unfortunately not all the kids are out of the house, but hopefully we can do it soon.:)
