I was never a fan of Bowling, and I thought Fahrenheit used sensationalism too much, and I felt some of his claims were irresponsible. I was however, thoroughly impressed by Sicko. I suppose your point of view of a commentator will change a lot by your current beliefs at the time, and how the issue will affect your judgment a lot. I mean it makes sense that I would be biased, it's just interesting how the point of view changed for me on Moore after watching Bowling a few years ago and Sicko last week. Of course, my political opinions have changed a lot in the past 5 years. I'm a cautious fan now.
What exactly were you impressed by with Sicko? Even some Canadians were criticle of Sicko. Examples: Toronto Star Calagary Sun
I only read the first article, I'll review the second one and post on that later. (I'm about to go to sleep) But the first article only complaint is in fact, that the picture of Canada's healthcare in the film is too perfect. I don't consider a few Candian critics being critical of their own helathcare any critique on the the film itself. The fact is that private healthcare in the US is deplorable. His comparisons of public healthcare to public education are acurate, and his pleas that we as Americans deserve more and the fact that we dont accept more is the fact that we are conditioned to accept such treatment. I don't agree with all the film. France's welfare system is horrible. They have 10% unemployment, and they could cut that by 2 percent in three years if they required a few more work hours and a few less benifits. But they also have a much larger immagrant unemplyment rate, of which the motification is partially racisim. But that doesn't mean that we shouldn't look at the main message of the film. Everybody living in the US, regardless of income, deserves to be healthy. They should have that supported by all of society, because we should care enough for that to be so.
Keep in mind that we do have gov't provided healthcare like medicaide and medicare, both may need reforming,so the U.S system isn't a fully privatized system. Many have said that the U.S system has problems related to too much gov't involvement in healthcare. Private healthcare is too expenisve for many because some states require you to take on coverages you might not actually need. Anyway,I'am seeing that things like conumer driven healthcare in the form of Health Savings Accounts are becoming more widespread now. The solutions to America's healthcare will probably come in expanding market oriented approaches.
I think Michael Moore is a lying deceitful hypocrite with no class. Other than that I don't like him.
Consumer health savings accounts will not be a viable option to support lower class Americans with serious health problems. The market is designed to turn as much of a profit as possible, so isn't designed for things like health care or education. God help us when Red Bull is sponsering our high schools.
Well it'll probably be best to view HSA's as a part of the healthcare solution rather than the solution. Good article: Health savings accounts becoming more appealing Nov. 22, 2007 12:00 AM The high cost of health insurance consistently ranks as a top concern among small-business owners. And solutions have proven hard to come by. But health savings accounts, which were introduced just a few years ago, are a more affordable option for many small businesses. What's more, HSA rules were changed this year to greatly improve the benefits of these plans for both employers and employees... Azcentral
