I heard that in parts of Canada they sell codeine OTC as long as it has two other ingredients. (like Acteminophen and caffine.) Anyone know if this is true... I don't feel like looking it up right now.

OTC: 1/8 grain codeine with aspirin & caffeine...

& maybe 1/8 grain codeine with acetaminophen...

(US citizens can bring one bottle back for personal use (or at least they used to before all this "overseas/canadian" cheapo drug hysteria in the US recently poppoed up)...)

In most states in the US you can buy codeine w/ guaifenesin cough syrup without a prescription, if you can find a pharmacist that sells it. Federal law allows the sale of a four ounce bottle to an adult, signature and ID required, every 48 hours, at the discretion of a pharmacist. The pharmacist must believe it is being used medically. Please don't come in the pharmacy with the fake, loud hacky cough, though. It never works...
Some states have made codeine RX only.

Sure, ME. I am a pharmacy tech, and we sell it all the time.

Here is the link to the Virginia law regarding sale of schedule V narcotics without a prescription. As I said, though, many states have made stricter laws. Also, read some Jim Carroll books. He talks about buying codeine from the druggist all the time.

Also, look up the Federal Control Drug Act.

By the way, a lot of drugs are listed on the VA page, but codeine is currently the only one on the market in packaging designed for OTC use.

Not long ago, pharmacists used to mix paregoric (morphine) with Coca-Cola and serve it at their lunch counters...

For the cough syrup? Ask for Robitussin AC...it is only available in generic now, though (Mytussin AC, Guaituss AC, and others, just say Robitussin AC)

The Canadian codeine otc, Tylenol Compound #1, I think.

Do 'ya know if therres anyway to get rid of the guaifenesin? I know with pills you can do a cold water extraction to get rid of the acetaminophen... how much guaifenesin is a dangerous amount?

BTW thanks for the help. [IMG]

I have never, ever heard of a guaifenesin overdose. The max dose, however, is 1200mg every 12 hours.

I don't know how to get rid of it. I am not too concerned with guaifenesin.

The worst it would make you do is to shit like a goose! It is a cough "expectorant" and not even proven to work, but it does loosen up your bowels. I don't think you can OD on it, either. I know some people with Fibromyagia who take huge quantities of it.

I have heard of this too. I am not aware of the specific doses used, but I think for fibromyalgia they can be up around 5000mg per day or more. Do you know the doses used? I have heard few, but very promising results with it. Very interesting. From what I understand they think it loosens up substances in the lymph system, allowing "toxins" to be freed. Is that what you have heard? They still obviously don't know, or they wouldn't use such vague language as "toxins." As far as I know, they don't know of a particular "toxin" that causes fibro.

Please fill me in. My mother suffers from fibromyalgia from silicone poisioning. I finally got her to start taking the standard, first line treatment, amitriptyline. It has helped her alot, but she is having to increase the dose very frequently. In two months she has gone from 25mg at bedtime, to 50mg twice a day. The max dose is 300mg per day, and then she would probably be a zombie. The Elavil has helped, but I think she needs something else. Oh, of course she is also on Motrin 600mg, every 6 hours.

Maggie, please: tell me what you know. Perhaps we should start a new thread...

I buy AC&C all the time from shoppers drug mart. 8mgs of codein per pill, and its really simply to extract. I usually take about 25 pills for a dose of codein.

Photo, I know two neurologists who tried guifenasen on fibro patients. One of the neuros has fibro himself. Unfortunately both of them said they got "negliable effects" from the drug. The dosage you described is about what I have heard. Most docs like to prescribe it in pill form, as taking that much in liquid is nasty.

I wish I had better news, but both my current neuro and the one I had before (the one who has fibro and refered me to my current Hero neuro) haven't seen great results with the drug. But I know some Fibro pateints who got impatient and self prescribed. A few of them said they did OK, some did well, and some saw no change.

Maybe she could get her doc to prescribe the pills to give it a try, she may actually get a good response. It couldn't hurt to try, as the drug is pretty benign, as you know. The worst that I think could happen is just some runny stools.

I hope your mom can get some relief. Fibro is awful.
