I'm about to put dreads back in my hair and I'm so excited!!! I did it myself ten years ago with love and backcombing but no bands or wax. I never got my halo of fuzzy roots to be involved, though. I've got thick curly caucasian hair.

I noticed many people on this board say no wax...why? What happens? What about rubber banding them to start? Helpful? DreadHeadHQ is all over the web, are they helpful or...not?

    Thanks! Yay! Can't wait!

backcombing is ok, in my opinion. wax is water resistent and can cause mold growth and inhibits matting and further dreading. rubber bands also tend to keep locks from.. locking haha by not letting them move naturally and can get lost in your dreads and turn into an icky goop. ewies.

basically, wax and bands are things that keep most people from being nervous about their hair while it dreads. there is no need to be nervous, they take a lil time and patients but they'll look tight and funky is you just drop the wax and chuck the bands.

This, of course, all opinion and I have seen a few (stressing "few") cases of locks done with wax that looked neato but i think your best bet is to just go natural :)
