They are ok.. I love the agression for authority and well more like everything.. There was not one thing that they were not pist off about.. I kinda like that cause that is how i feel sometimes.. An ok band at best is my opinion. They did help spread punk so I have to give them that. I love the ramones.. They just seem more "american" and I just seem to dig the style and thier attitude more..
Personally, I see them sellouts after they let Sid Vicious in. I find the punk movement a haven for intellectual thought, such as bands like Crass portrayed, however many of the people closest to Sid described him as dimwitted and stupid. They might've been the first, but they've been outpreformed by so many other bands. Nowadays, they're more like the poster children for the pseudo-punk and skater kids.
That's true. He did turn the band into sellouts that went against the point of Punk, but I don't really think that's a good thing.
Cause he was just an image, he was a bass player who couldn't play bass, at alot of shows his amp wasn't even turned on.
much better bands out there. sex pistols are alright, john lydon sold out and shit but i mean the music was alright but while he was singing about anarchy and shit there were bands out there actually participating in it. im pretty indifferent towards it
No matter what you think of their music or their 'selling out' it cant be denied that they gave voice to an entire disaffected generation. Their live performances and general attitude inspired countless folk to pick up a guitar, grab a mike etc.
I mean yes, it is undeniable that they spurred this mass following of "punk" kids, but that was simply because they WERE marketable. they represented the angsty side of youth, so therefore people greatly identified with them. It inspired folks to pick up a guitar and grab a mike, but not to DO anything about changing the world. Like infested sinner said, there were plenty of bands actually doing shit, but the Sex Pistols just sung about how anarchy would be swell.
They didn't sing about how anarchy would be "swell", they were singing about what was happening on the streets of Britain in the mid to late 70's with race riots, high unemployment, I.R.A. bombs in London and a general feeling of mass discontent. The Pistols never claimed to want to change the world, they were only pointing out how fucked up the U.K. was/is. Also not many singers get slashed because their song provokes attacks from right wing thugs.
the sex pistols are fucking amazing. don't piss on them because they had some sucess where as so many punk bands who may or may not have been better didn't. The songs themselves are great, there is no denying that.
Sex Pistols blew...they werent the first to do anything but suck really hard...there were a bunch of bands in the 70's that were harder and more talented...the only reason you guys like the pistols is because you havent heard good early punk...The Velvet Underground were more punk than the Pistols...the Saints...i mean c-mon...if i got payed for playing as bad as them i would OD on bullshit like Sid did...The only thing the Sex Pistols did was to help kill Punk Rock...
If they helped kill Punk Rock we wouldn't even be having this discussion. And yes, over the last 25 years or so i have heard good early punk. Cock Sparrer and Slaughter and the Dogs to name but two were going way before the Pistols.
