my dog used to chew everything he could get at when he was about a year old. all i had to do was make sure he had bones of his own to chew on. i bought him nylabones and he loved them. if he lost them or ate them, he would have to turn to something else (ie household objects) so i had to keep a constant supply. whenever i brought a new one home, he was so happy cause he knew it was all his and he could do whatever he wanted with it. he would rather not take my things but he really wanted to chew.
try getting the dog all kinds of toys and chews and giving them to him directly. of course the biggest problem is probably the boredom and lack of attention.
    eugene has some good advice.

I'm not sure if you're still with the girl or not, but if you are, then you're still with the dog. That being the case, let's deal with the fact you live in a city (East Baltimore). Find the largest park available, and make sure that you or your girl walk your dog for an hour a day. The exercise won't hurt you, either. If one of you is a jogger or cyclist, take him jogging or cycling with you. Since the dog is a large (Rottweiler) breed, he is a natural protector for your girl.

If you can find a rural environment nearby, run him behind your car on some gravel road where there's not much traffic. I do that with my husky, 3 km per day minimum. (Luckily I live in a small town with untravelled roads nearby.)

On the other hand, if you really hate this dog, and your girl doesn't want to let go of him, it's time to find a new girl friend, but that's sort of a last resort, I think.

Above all, if you can bond with this dog (and it seems you haven't yet), do so. Give your dog unlimited love and affection and it will know your love and return it.

It works for me and my dog, Maximilian Husky.

    OMG!!!!!!

I just got off the phone with my girl and the dog killed 2 of the kittens!!!

One of our cats had 4 kittens 2 days ago and he killed 2 and she don't know if the other is going to live or not!!

She said she got off work and walked in the door and there was one of the kittens laying in blood on the stairs, then when she walked in the room there was one dead on the bed and one on the floor shaking and twitching and bleeding (But still alive)!!! [IMG]

I am flabbergasted!!! I mean these 3 precious creature's don't get a chance at life!!! [IMG]

*sigh* that sorta is the nature of many dogs im sorry to say. i can totaly see an untrained, confused, bored and spoiled dog doing something like that. its the same with some dogs here that kill livestock. i think you need to tell her to find another home for the dog, this girl isnt going to figure it out. some people just cant relate to animals and think they need to be treated like people.

These things happen. A couple of years ago the five year old boy next door decided that Maximilian the husky should get together and be friends with his pet rabbit. The dog slipped his collar, ripped the rabbit's cage apart and killed it. I found out when I got home from work.

Some of the blame goes to me for keeping the dog on a home-made collar that he could slip off if he tried hard enough. I now have him on a store-bought collar and a wire-core leash at all times when he's outside. I don't particularly trust him with the neighborhood cats, so he has to stay on the leash/chain combination. The chain is made of welded steel links with a rated strength of 560 pounds.

At any rate I explained to the boy, and to his mother, that Max's ancestors for the last million years have made their living precisely by killing rabbits and other rodents.

I would suggest finding the dog a new home. (Without letting the gf know) You might catch a lot of sh*t for it but it sounds like that is your only option-especially if its killing your other pets.

That's so sad and horrible. I'm afraid your gf is really a huge part of the problem too.

okay, this girl has led this poor dog into this miserable state. Dogs chew things up because they feel lonely and nervous. Obviously this dog gets no attention whatsoever. She should have put him in a cage when she's not around from the start. I know it seems immoral and like the dog is not free, but it really helps them out when they're puppies. Puppies get stressed out when their owners are not around, but when they're in a cage they feel some sense of security. If she were to do this even for a few months in the beginning, and then stop using the cage and let the pup roam around the apt, the dog would feel less stressed out now when she's away. I just don't understand why people get puppies and then not give them any attention. I feel sorry for this dog. He needs a different owner right away or he's going to get even worse...

I totally agree but she don't listen to reason. It sad when untrained owners have pets they cannot care for :( She will NEVER get rid of him. I don't even talk to her anymore. After 2 1/2 years I said enough is enough.

Thanks for all the responses though :)

This is not a dog problem, this is an owner problem. The owner of this dog killed those two kittens. If you take me to the zoo and handcuff me and lock me in the Bengal Tiger's cage after hours, that's murder.

Motherfuck, I would have thrashed it.

Okay, probably not, but you have no idea how much I would have wanted to. Catkillers piss me off and little defenseless kittens... just... erg. What their final moments must have been like... Does she have any sense of anyone else other than what the stupid DOG is feeling?? What in hell was she thinking??

Guess cats just aren't as important. *rolls eyes and tries not to let impossible situation get to her*

That is really sad.Dirtrydog had it just right and she needs to be told as much.It would have been difficult for me to restrain myself if I was in a room with a dog like that, although it would be wrong to punish an animal that has such a stupid owner.Could end up attacking a person and the owner will get what's coming to her.Dumb-ass.

I hope these women you know don't have kids, too. I have a wonderful dog and out if 23 pups she's had, I kept one from the last litter. What a nightmare. I've never had a dog I couldn't train, until him. At 8 months he was big and completely submissive to me (although he did chew everything), but off the property he would roam around ambushing people, chasing chickens, cornering and scaring people and dogs...I couldn't brake the habit, despite his relative good behaviour at home. Fencing my 35acre property was not an option. Finally, last Boxing Day he killed a neighbor's calf and got shot. I know of 7 of her pups and they are all great dog. Sometimes a dog is just not quite right. (This one was a Border Collie+Blue Heeler.). As for the chewing thing, trianing, stimulation and maturity are the key.

Some kittens were left where other animals could get to them, one did, and as a result, the kittens are dead. It's totally sad, but not the dog's fault. If the owner can't be bothered to FIX her cat in the first place, or at least be responsible and diligent about the resulting kittens, she has no business owning any animal or having anything rely on her.

This is not the dog's fault.

It's not the dog's fault. It's my ex's fault, she's too daft to see the big picture and tries to justify what she is doing....... ::Sighs:: I just couldnt do it anymore...
