My friend is finally going to go through with getting dreadlocks! So he was wanting know if it was best to dread his hair now and let it grow, or wait for his hair to grow out then dread it? He has curly/shaggy/messy/long hair btw.

Depends. I never 'got' my dreads, they just kind of happened over a few years. If they're supposed to be a reflection of one's rejection of mainstream values and ideals then I personally think it's stupid to go and pay a load of money to have them done... Not everyone can deal with having a rat's nest on their head though and eventually I went a bit mad and shaved my head bald apart from 5 long dreads at the back- Hare Krishna stylee. Now my hair's getting quite long again and I'm quite comfortable with them just hanging down the back...
