Excellent choice PM!.[IMG] 'Misirlou' by Dick Dale may well be the finest surf music recording.

Well, from this list I'd go with the two Dick Dale songs. They're both really great :). I dig Pipeline very much as well.

Wipe out is a really great tune too, but with instrumental surf rock songs it's also about the recording. I mean, a lot of the better surf rock tunes have been played by lots of bands. Some versions are even better then the original. My favourite version of Wipe out is by the Saints for sure!

Also, a best surf instrumental list isn't complete without an instrumental of the Revels. :D
Comanche (also in the movie Pulp fiction), Revellion and Sano are some of their finest in my opinion. They also do a really nice version of Tequila.

A few other of my favourite surf instrumentals:
Al Casey - Surfin' blues part 2 (1995)
the Caps - The red headed flea (1966?)
    Centurians - Tuff soul (1963)
Charles Napiers - Egyptian thing (1997)
Jim Waller & the Deltas - Let's go surfin' (1962)
the Lively Ones - The caterpillar crawl (2004) <- very mellow, just great! Happy gremmie is also superb by them.
the Original Surfaris - Vesuvius, and also Church key (1963). Both tunes are also very well done by the Revels. Beep beep by the Original Surfaris is also great! And the very relaxed Latina'ia too :)
Richie Allen & the Pacific Surfers - Ground swell (1963)

Wooo!! - Kissed by Dick Dale. You should have got him to serenade you with his guitar.
Also thanks for the list of other 'Surf Instrumentals'.I'll make a note of it cos some are song I haven't heard before.
It's possible that 'The Ventures' recorded a version of 'Misirlou';they seem to have recorded everything that ever was in surf instrumentals!!!.I give them credit for 'Walk,Don't Run' very advanced 12 bar blues for 1960!.

Let me through in a relatively newer song here, Surfin the Slow Wave by Wishbone Ash, very Venture-esque.

To me it is just the tone of the guitar. Listen to the songs from the pole, plus 'Walk Don't Run' by they Ventures.

Don't know why that one wasn't in the pole. Is 'Solar Race' a better known Ventures tune than 'Walk Don't Run' to somebody?

Hey, what about "Telstar", covered by the Ventures, forget the original group. I think The Tornados?

And "No Matter What Shape Your Stomach Is In" [from th Alka Seltzer commercial, approx. 63?] by the T-Bones.

And "Percolator" [from the Maxwellhouse Coffee commercial, approx. 61- 63?] covered by The Ventures, again forget the original group.

And "Out Of Limits" [theme song from The Outer Limits TV show, 63 - 64?] by the Markets.

Also, "Bumble Boogie" by B. Bumble & The Stingers [not sure this qualifies as Surf genre], though The Ventures did cover it.

As well as 'Red River Rock", and "Reveille Rock" both by Johnny and The Hurricanes -- [Surf genre?] also covered by The Ventures.

My fav. is "No Matter What Shape Your Stomach Is In"! The album cover has black & white stills from the Alka Seltzer commercial on the front. God, I'd love to see that commercial again. The commercial song proved to be so popular that the Markets released it as the albums title song. Also a 45 single. Don't know if they did the track for the commercial, but I don't think so. I think it was a group of studio musicians

It' the same with Percolator. The commercial song was so popular some one eventually released it on an album & 45 single.

And the same with Out of Limits.

By the way, I voted for Wipe Out, as far as the poll choices go.

    Surfs Up!!!!! [IMG]
