I was just going to post something like this. I was thinking that you could staple different colored LED xmas lights to a board to make a nice SCROG setup of something, but I guess not

Don't waste your time. The technology is years away yet.

The problem is the intensity. LED's simply cannot grow plants unless they're almost touching it. It would take LOTS of LED's to even grow a marginal plant. Might work well on seedlings or clones, but not larger plants.

While they can mimic the sun's spectrum with today's technology, they can't deliver it in any great intensity, at least not the kind the sun can. Pot plants are light hungry. To serve them LED's would just tease them.

I have seen a guy who grew under LED lights to finially see how they worked. For veg they actually worked as good or better than hid or flurescent lighting. The main problem, as stated earlier in the thread, comes from not enough light intensity. In order for a plant to produce fruit or flowers or anything like that takes a lot of extra energy. The flowering stage is where marijuana uses most of its energy, this is the same reason that HID bulbs are preferred over fluorescents. The buds with LEDs just don't thicken up, they stay fluffy and light. I think that LEDs could be used in conjunction with some HPS bulbs for a nice continuous veg and flower room. I think I am going to make an LED board and try vegging some plants under it, just as an experiment.
