What about hobby-farming? I know a soybean farmer, a wheat farmer, a couple corn farmers, and several hobby-farmers... most of whom have apple/berry orchards. From what I've heard, it seems that with a limited budget (and yes, 2 mil is really small potatoes to the cover-crop farmers!) that would be the best bet. You need far less land, DON'T need most of the enormously expensive machinery, and can farm it with a much smaller staff of people. I know of a few families that have done this within the past 20 years or so, and they're doing just fine now. The biggest selling point I've seen for hobby farms is harvest-day celebrations. Hay-rides through the orchard, pick-your-own apples & pumpkins right from the field, and ready-made pies, ciders & jellies sold at a premium price with little to no expense put out by the owner. One family I know has a VERY small (80-acre) orchard and the husband was able to quit his "day job" this year when they started selling jams & preserves online. It can be done... I'm just not sure it can be done with a single-crop farm! love, mom
me personally,if i had 2 million dollars, id go with grass fed organic beef as a commodity. much less headache, always a market for it,and a huge profit margin. theres in comparison little start up costs, little overhead.. you could get 500 acres of prime grass land,150 head of cattle,truck,trailer,4 wheeler, tractor, everything tool wise youd need for well under a million, and then its all profit from there,or virtually all as there is no debt. thats what id do...
That's a good point... I've got a cousin in TN that raises beef... don't know much about the details, but he can't have started with much up front!
you can get springing heifers(cows already pregnant,2 for 1) for a 1000 to 1200. if he was to get 150 or 200 that price would go down somewhat. but he would eat that up having them transported,. still,he could have 200 head brought to his door all pregnant for under 250 thousand. being that they are all pregnant he could make his first sells within a year. the goin rate on hoof for non organic beef at auction is about a buck 50 a pound, each cow will way around 800 to a thousand pounds at sale. he could easily sell 100 his first sale. you do the math.. remember organic grass fed beef brings a much higher price per pound and there is virtualy no overhead. just you an jose could keep the fences fixed an rotate the cows etc... yep,, thats what id do..
Thank you for the offer! But is it in America? America is going into a recession. In that case it's better to wait until the market stabilizes and the dollar rises again. So 2 milion isnt enough. thats very bad news, taxes are higher in Europe so it will be a little more expencive. I should wait until I have 3 milion.
Then put it somewhere you can get 4 or 5 percent or more which would be 80,000 bucks at 4 and scale back to a business that isn't so expensive to start.Look at other options, interests that you have and see what the satisfaction, money would be.That's it.
