Last october we went to Ocracoke island NC, the weather was perfect for barefooting and I was able to spend much of my time there barefoot. The town is a quaint little village and I think most of the stores there are barefoot friendly. At least 3 of the shops had barefoot employees, and I seen several (I am assuming locals) riding bikes barefoot and walking around barefoot. Nobody even seemed to look when you were barefoot, There were a few, though they were generally older people who were painfully obviously tourists. By me walking around barefoot I felt as if I fit right in. I mean at the grocery store in town I walked in barefoot, nobody even looked. Even more amazing I seen at least 4 other people going barefoot in and out of there during our stay. Amazing. Hatteras Island didn't seem as barefoot friendly, there were some no barefeet signs and whatnot. The best part was since I barefooted alot in the summer my feet were in great shape and the sandspurs didn't even bother me when I stepped on them, unless the got my arch. I definately recommend it there.
Great trip report. I enjoy hearing of others adventures and it sounds like a wonderful place to visit someday. What kinds of activities are best for barefooting on hatteras. and how painful are sandspurs ? I've never had a problem with them, must be lucky.
Wow, your right, it may be a record, I guess I was just excited. That place is amazing. Coming from a place where you see barefooters few and far between and get so many negative looks, Ocracoke was a complete change of pace.
The sandspurs I could barely feel on my soles if at all, on my arches it varied from slightly annoying to painful. Hatteras was limited to checking out certain stores that has no signs, I wanted to go up to the top of hatteras lighthouse without shoes, but they required at least flip flops. So on with the flops and it was still great. And of course the beach and walking around in town are always options. As you go further north in the outer banks there were less barefoot people and more tourists,we only spent a day up there.
Yea, I dont live to far from there and it is def a great place to go barefooting. Beaufort, NC is about an hour or so south by fairy and it is also a pretty barefoot and dog friendly. Backstreet Pub is the place to go!
Wow, this is an old thread- but I love Ocracoke!! We're going down to NC in 3 weeks, and will spend at least a day there! I'll have to remember this so i don't wear shoes when I don't have to I can't wait!!
