Just wondering. I'm bisexual, love and am more attracted to women, and I also completely believe in Jesus. It doesn't feel like a contradiction to me at all, but lots of times people try to make me feel like it is a contradiction. It actually really hurts sometimes when I hear it, you know the talk that implies or outright says you cannot be both gay and Christian at the same time. I dont' believe that, but I dont' feel like I can articulate to others why, I wish I could. Not trying to start a debate here really though, I just was wondering if there are any others here? And how do you deal with it when other Christians go on the "homosexuality is a sin" tirade, how do you respond to it? I know of an awsome website www.whosoever.org, and while I"d reccomend it to anyone, I wish I could say where I stand in my own words, but I just get all sad and offended and wanna cry and end up not taking part in those conversations, because I dont' know how to explain and get so sad that I HAVE to explain where I"m coming from. Plus I"ve read the new testament once, the gospels twice, but I"ve never read the old testament yet. So I'm not really comfterable trying to "prove a point" that way, y'know?
Spirituality knows nothing of rules. Religion cannot stand to be without them. Who or what you are at this moment in time will change. As will the beliefs you hold dear. I wouldn't worry about going to hell over your attration to the same sex. It is what you carry in your heart that opens the door to the kingdom. No other key will fit. So let those who would look down their noses at you worry if THEY have the right key. x
I'm not LGBT, or a christian. but if you encounter the snippy bible thumpers, you could point out that only male homosexual (and really, it was more like pedophilia than the relationships we think of today) activity is forbidden. y'see, the root of the sin is the wasting of seed (semen). when females orgasm, they don't throw genetic material everywhere. lesbianism and bi-curiosity (in females atleast) is a grey area (not encouraged, but not expressely forbidden). Sometimes you get those awful s.o.b.s who think that AIDS is the wrath of god (Despite the fact that AIDS mostly affects poor black females), you can throw the fact that lesbians have the lowest incidence of HIV transmission in their faces. it fucks up their fragile moral world.
Christians who condemn lesbianism and bisexuality point to Saint Paul's epistle to the Romans 1:18-27, which deals with pagans who reject God and are therefore given over to corrupting lusts and passions. Paul mentions that "their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural" and refers to this as "degrading passions". Then he goes on specifically to condemn male homosexual behavior. The implication is that all homosexuality, male and female alike, violates natural law, which was the leading Greco-Roman moral philosophy that Paul and subsequent religious writers read into the Bible. Some liberal scholars, like gay historian John Boswell, claim that all of this refers to heterosexuals who experiment in homosexuality, but there's nothing in the text to make that clear. It's also possible, in light of modern knowledge, to ask the question: Are lesbianism, homosexuality, and bisexuality "unnatural" functions? The traditional idea was that the natural function of sex is procreation, and the Jews of Paul's time made a big deal about traditional gender roles. So that's where the Christians you run into who condemn lesbianism are coming from. Are they right? I'm not sure, but you might seek further advice and follow your own conscience.
If you want to be able to debate this issue the best course of action is to get to know your bible very well, if you're serious about being a Christian you should do this anyway. Also my understanding from the OT was that sodomy was the problem not homosexuality. in fact i think it goes along the lines of "no man should sleep with another man as if he were a woman". this really doesn't condemn lesbianism.
honestly you've got to be really stupid to believe in orgnaized religion, i believe in God wholeheartedly but if you think you are going to sprout wings and fly away to some magical kingdom... please. its logic, humans have an endless desire for more and this can never be satisfied, humans fight, there are no perfect humans. there are just so many logical problems with a "heaven", and it seems to me much more logical that people use it as a crutch because they feel alone, helpess, and are searching for answers in a really shitty world. i guess if it makes them better people in the end its a good thing...
I'm bi, and christian. Why or if homosexuality actually is a sin is still something I'm confused over; all the messages are so biased and have been so embelished that you cant' really tell what the truth is anymore. I'm just gonna pray and hope I can discern the truth for myself. But anyway, you're totally not alone!!!
well if you truly believe in your religion why not suppress your same sex urges to avoid eternal damnation?
