Things like this are of course stupid, and anyone with a few braincells would accept that calling an object which is black black is not racism. It is however my experience that these stories are almost EXLCUSIVELY spouted by those claiming the world is being overrun by "the PC brigade" as J0hn likes to say Never have i heard someone use this in all seriousness, or tell me not to say blackboard etc. These stories are hyped up to give more credibility to the idea that "its political correctness gone mad" and that being considerate is somehow ludicrous. If youd ask me to guess, id say the racists made these assumptions and ideas widespread for this very reason. People surely cant be that stupid
We just called them ****** and honkey boards  I jest of course. A certain level of common decency through political correctness should be expected in society. It should not be acceptable to pass someone in the street and insult them for the colour of their skin. But yes, you're right, using black and white to describe inanimate objects should not be a matter for political correctness. To apply customs of PC and common decency to them almost defeats the whole of it....
Sorry but I think your just repeating old and jaded pieces of rascist propaganda myself. If you were sixteen you'd never have come across the word blackboard. .
Why didnt i think to say it like that? Propagandas exactly what it is. Old fusty bits of propaganda im surprised anyones still repeating
highflyingbird said it actually happened to her, though... I wonder who did the 'correcting' - perhaps it was a joke? I've a hard time thinking anyone would have been serious about it, as it is plainly ludicrous, and yes just more grist to the likes of people who still say "political correctness gone mad" without a hint of irony!
Im just mystified as to why someone either joking with her or being completely backward would lead her to the conclusion that "everythings racist these days" Its hardly like the lines could become blurred Man intentionally sets out to insult woman by using foul language and dragging up her place of birth vs Person calls object the colour that it is Hmm
i'm a bit late on this thread obviously; but here is my opinion on the original topic. i'm slightly confused as to why the woman was overly offended at being called english when she is welsh. (hearkened to me a remembrance not to long ago of a certain poster taking great offense at being asked if she were Indian). that being said however, the guy was a dick. he shouldn't have been so offensive in the first place. to say however that well everything would be a-okay if he'd just shouted at her "you welsh bitch" or "you fuckin bitch" or whatever wouldn't really justify it either. to me, maybe because i'm not from around these parts originally, it seems a bit strange that so much offense would be taken from being called 'english' however. in my mind i see a bit like say me calling KC a hick or redneck just because she's from the south and I'm from the North and her in turn calling me a WASP, yankee or what not. (and sorry KC for using you as an example, just only person that came to mind that is in the States). maybe it is the sense of nationalism and not actually racism that is the real issue behind it. i do think, however, that arresting someone for making a comment like that is a bit over the top. does this mean, if someone talks to me on the street and calls me a fat American (which well deny it as i might like to, i am one) that i should be able to put them in jail for that? isn't that ultimately a waste of police resources? now, if they came at me threateningly, and were about to beat me up or did do some sort of physical harm or continuous harassment, that would be a bit different. at best, this lorry driver, should have been given a ticket for inciting road rage. (don't know if that is a ticketable offense or not, but it should be). i think he was rude, crude, and horrible for doing that to someone. i wouldn't want someone to shout at me like that (but it has happened). and i did the sensible thing, and walked away. i don't know, maybe i am just being naive.
As the author of this thread clearly points out, "Political correctness has gone mad".I believe that there are alot of things which are simply common sense. We don't then need to make common sensical things law. Unfortunately this is how it is going on. As a result, over 1000 new laws have been passed. It is very likely that more and more people will see a day in court, simply for either smoking in the wrong place or saying something or doing something politically incorrect. Take the Sudan incident. It has now become global: To see what Britain could be like, lets see Sudan. A teacher names a teddy Muhammed and gets dragged in front of a jury, judge and is locked up. Meanwhile, everyone who is politically correct is calling for her execution. The teacher was innocent, but it was politically incorrect to name a teddy bear Muhammed. I rest my case. Additional: This teddy bear thing, has nothing to do with the religion of Islam. It has more to do with political correctness. Gone mad, you bet./
i saw that story, it was in fact the students that named the bear she just allowed it. and she's now in prison for 2 weeks (i think it was) and will be removed from the country, which is really i think for her own safety as many do want her killed.
Now she is home in Britain. She was pardoned by the president of Sudan. She flew out two days ago and has arrived safely in Britain. At first I thought Islam was indeed non peaceful. But then I realise it was political correctness. That is the real extremism. And by PC extremism, it casts negative backlash on one of the religions that constantly get a bad wrap-Islam.
John, please please take this on board as I've said it to you every time you've posted on this kind of topic. Running with scissors and smoking in public place have NOTHING to do with political correctness. They're issues of public safety. Political correctness concerns not causing deliberate offence to another person or a group of people because they are of a different race, gender or religion to you or if, say, they are disabled or homosexual. Calling for the death penalty is not a matter for political correctness either. It's to do with a very particular, radically conservative interpretation of Islamic texts. No one was calling for the death penalty out of political correctness. They were calling for it out of religious fervour....
It was my psychology teacher who corrected me, she was basically going through everything we're not allowed to say in the classroom. I'm still going to refer to it as a white board though.
Taken it on board. The scissors thing etc is Health and safety. Having said that, I feel the same way toward some Health and safety legislation. It can also be extreme.
Well, I'd say they were quite different. Welsh ethnicity can differ to English, Scottish and Irish ethnicity. I would say that is going slightly over the top, though. English people always joke about Welsh people abusing sheep.
Apparently sheep are not molested. Where this came from I don't know, but Wales and England. I predict a war.
