Hello, I'm just starting dreads (about a week ago) I havent put many in yet, maybe like 8 (back combing only, no wax). Is there any special way of creating dreads so they are tiny with normal hair mixed in?

just use smaller sections of hair when you backcomb.

They never seem to stay. I heard horror stories about rubber bands so I'm not using that, is there anything else I can do?

just dont brush your hair :) and when it starts to knot rip it into sections.... it takes awhile, but will look like those eventually... good luck.

Mine kinda sorta look like that. Just make small sections when you backcomb and then leave them alone. I haven't done any maintenance since I got them, so loose hairs escape, and it gives it that mixed normal hair and dreads look.

use smaller sections and try twisting and ripping combined with backcombing to make them tighter. like spork says, the loose hairs that work themselves free after a few washes will give your hair that mixed look. good luck and welcome!
