Hmmm, censorship on a 'free speech' forum and not the first time I've seen it either. What a load of pish. The post in question was not offensive or attacking just questioning.

As such I'll post it again. If a mod has a problem they can PM me and tell me what HF guidelines I've broken.

Skirting around questions with three word answers hardly constitutes debate. Neither does screaming insult every time someone states an opinion (or indeed fact) that you don't like.

So is my god complex/spaceship theory any less valid an opinion than yours? Why?

Should I be insulted if you find it ridiculous?

I spotted your disappearing post, Reverend, it doesn't seem to have been deleted, the site crashed shortly after you posted it and I assume it got sucked up when the database was rolled back or somesuch:)

Moon Beam im sorry too if i hurt your feelings...

And actually in yr 4 they asked me if i wanted to sit out the prayers on Roman Day and it was in latin and it was praying to someone or other. Thats the only time they asked if i wanted to sit it out. We had to pray in assembly every week. but lol i didnt want to so i just pretended to...
In fact for this year so far my christian friend also hates RE because of the focus on christianity...

Now as for why its targeted Id say its because it is an easy target, there are alot of things that you could say about christianity to insult it and yet youd be hard pressed to find many good things because the bad things are much more publicised. (although my yr 7-9 re teacher was forever telling me how great christianity was and it was the only religon to say "love thy neighbour" or whatever it was)

Also its like Phoenix Indigo said, Christianity is the main religon which tries to convert people, and they do it alot, have you ever heard a buddhist say "you're in for a big shock when you die" or something like that? have you heard them tell you about how terrible your life is gonna be if you dont believe? No cos they dont convert. They live and let live. Thats why people still let them "live" whereas Christianity never did that.
    well thats my opinion anyhoo.

We only ever went to church.

    hahahahahaha

I think in this case both 'the men' largely agree with you. That said, we're not prone to censoring opinions we disagree with....

Not in the UK forum but I have seen others have posts removed when they were completely within forum guidelines in other parts of the site in the past...

    The
part would have probably made more sense if spoken in a stoned american drawl. It was meant in jest/self ridicule :)

It's true that Christianity, alongside Islam, is chief amongst the proselytising faiths - in contrast to, say, Judaism, into which it is notoriously to convert. However, I have as many problems with Buddhism and the Buddhist conception of what happens to you after you die as I do with Christianity. For example, it's a common belief that disabled people are being punished for their bad karma in a previous life. I find this belief absolutely disgusting and morally outrageous. This thread, of course, is focussed on Christianity, and indeed it is a special focus for this time of year given that Christianity is part of the dominant British culture, but I'll make it clear that I criticise all religions and their unfounded truth-statements equally....

I know, I chuckled, just wanted to make our policy clear. The UK Forum has always been a lot more liberal than other forums. Even where something breaks a guideline, but is doing very little harm, I'll often bend the rules....

I think the amount of shouting here has the affect debasing debate, whomever feels an opinion to the contrary might feel assaulted.

I also find the vehemence against what in all honesty at worst an hours boredom to allow family tradition more interesting.

Why when we wish to degrade an opinion are we always able to secure a hate tale to justify ourselves. I know a woman, I know a black man, I know a homosexual, Iknow a teacher, I know a jew, I know a christian, fill in your own words and spread the hate.

Religion and belief in something more than their own Id is important to a lot of people and they will never be able to justify their faith precisely because it is faith and not a learning, "You just don't understand".

I struggle to get right words quite often, let alone the young ones.

I don't think I'll waste my time explaining why I might have been offended, it will only take the focus off this thread and most likely lead to more criticism. Although from what I can induce from your posts you really lack respect to others who beliefs differ from yours.

I know it's easy to take these things personally, but no one's attacking you personally Moon Beam. And I'd like to think no one's unreservedly attacking your beliefs. I'd hope this could form part of a constructive debate in which all sides are heard and we can all come away with respect for one another's opinions....

I didn't grow up in the UK but in another majority Christian country. I loathed nativity plays and the like throughout school. In my school, there were quite a few kids from different racial, cultural and religious backgrounds. The Christian stuff was an unnecessary addition to already existing tensions.

I'm all for banning religious crap in schools. If you want to do a nativity play, do it on your own time.

Yeah that would be nice, won't happen though. If I say anything to defend my beliefs i'm proselytizing, but it's not in my nature to just letn things that I feel strongly about go. Some of the things I have heard on here, and even been told personally on here are not in the least bit respectful. Debate is a two way thing, I though respect was too. "Religious crap" for one - an opinion I accept but not too respecful!

I don't think anyone's accused you of proselytising. You have a right to defend your beliefs, just as others have a right to defend theirs or criticise religion more generally. And you don't have to take it personally, it's certainly not meant personally. As for respect, well, I certainly respect that you have a belief, I respect that they are your opinions and that we disagree. There are many aspects of religion, however, that I do not respect and will not pretend to respect. I would not be respectful, for example, of the Hindu caste system, which I consider to be absolutely abhorrent....

If people say certain things to me I will be offended and I will take it personally. Just because people haven't made them comments on this thread doesn't mean they haven't made them, but here they seem great!

Trust me, I know all too well what it's like to have one's opinions firmly in the minority. It's never a comfortable position, and it does put one on the defensive, and it's entirely fair for you to be able to defend your opinions. However, a thick skin is essential in these cases. Yes, it'd be a much easier life if we all surrounded ourselves with people who agreed with us, if we were sheltered from criticism and closeted from the world. But then we'd never learn, never change, never grow, never teach. So chin up, eyes to the sky....

Well I'm sorry -to a degree- if I upset you but one shouldn't have to apologise just because someone else takes offence to a clearly stated opinion. You're more than welcome to criticise and pick apart my ideas on the universe and call my thinking silly and I'm not going to take offence.

I think you really missed my point here. My worldview is that everyone has differing beliefs, none any more right or wrong than the other. We all get caught up in our heads and convince ourselves that our little worlds are the centre of the universe. We know nothing. Everything we believe is nonsense- including atheism- and the sooner people realise that and can pick apart their own arguments then the further we can advance as a race. By all means, have your own beliefs and follow your own rituals but people need to remember that's all they are, beliefs and rituals, not truths and definites and thus should be open to criticism. Hell, YOU should be the one criticising and improving on your beliefs to make the path you tread more sensible! 'Killing "Bob"' so to speak.

Following something dogmatically and righteously is never going to give you a balanced view of the world. Being insulted because someone doesn't like what you believe and says so is close minded. My opinion is no more valid than yours but saying I have no right to criticise your opinion is an insult to free speech.

Which, IMO, is what's bad about indoctrination. It becomes such a fundamental part of someone's psyche at an age where one can't really comprehend such concepts and they're left with this irrational mental hangup for the rest of their lives, often limiting people's outlooks. You can't go all Dawkins and tell people they're stupid and come across as a bit of a twat, that's just dogmatic in it's own way and sometimes in the case of fundamentals there's no point in arguing - "You can't teach a pig to sing. It'll only waste your time and annoy the pig" as the phrase goes. In the case of people cabable of rational thought however, is it not interesting to enter into debate and understand how other people think and if you see sense in some of it then work it into your outlook? Not just jumping on the defensive because you can't handle other people's opinions.

Blah I don't know if any of the above makes sense but we should never be too sure of ourselves because essentially we know nothing was the general gist.

One does not necessarily create the other cause and effect cannot be declared really.

Because someone may have an irational hang-up about what you consider as reality does not mean they are like that because they heard the stories in their youth, I'd suggest that it is a place returned to for those that require. Dismissing peoples beliefs as health issues is not condusive to free debate either tbh. :)
