i mean.. do you need to grade on more than a test.. a test is used to see if you have a full understanding of the material that you have learned.... that should've been plenty

right now its business since i have no idea what to do, my dad is trying to get me to go into engineering like he did but thats way too much math and i didnt inherit his smarts (he was in the top 10% of his class at wash u i think). But to tell you the truth me going to school is mostly to appease my parents and give me some more time to figure out what to do with my life.

You described to a tee why I was in college. My education was financed largely by loans that took me the better part of ten years to pay off because I was blessed with just enough smarts to fake my way through three years of liberal arts. Three years of partay woohoo... oh yeah I got my education.

The fact that I was there for other than good purposes and was essentially empowering other well-meaning folks to tell me the direction my life was to take was the major reason I washed out of college... I didn't really flunk out... I got the requisite C's and D's with the very accidental B now and then to ensure that I stay in but I had little interest in my studies- misappropriating money earmarked for books, transferring it to my drinking and smoking fund.

What would have helped me tremendously would have been to take a full year off and hold down a real job- experiencing what life is like without a degree before I blew my chance at earning enough through a profession to live comfortably. I don't know how dead set your folks are about keeping you in school but if it's possible I suggest you consider taking a year off so you can cultivate some inner motivation on following through with your studies.

You are abundantly intelligent.. your posts bear that out. I'd bet that with sufficient motivation you could even get an engineering degree- with lots of effort. So you might not make the Dean's list but the world is run by people who didn't get straight A's.

The year off would not only give you a taste of what it's like living without an education, it would also give you some time to decide what YOU want to do. Pursuing any course of study is going to be WAY more difficult if you have to fight to stay interested. Talk it over with your parents and see what they say. The fact that you give a damn about their investment speaks volumes about your character. If I were your dad I'd be proud as shit about how you turned out.

Here is a fact that will help you if you are taking a class that doesn't interest you; most colleges allow each student X amount of 'Pass/ Fail' courses, so you can pull of a D and it won't affect your GPA, but you will still get credits for it regardless. See if your school has that option, and if so, take advantage of it.

well i havent exactly taken any business courses yet so who knows maybe ill love it. I did work full time when i was 16 at dominos so i got an idea of what its like. Even if i dont like what im doing if i walk out with an associates or bachelors that will still help me land a decent job or will help me out if i decide to go into the military which ive been thinking about alot lately.

But thanks for the kind words stinkfoot unfortunately you couldnt be my father cause in my parents eyes im fuck up drug addict thats gonna end up on the streets i guess which is funny considering i dont even do any hard drugs or any with an od limit expect alcohol and ive decided to only drink on special occasions now.

Military? On one hand, a couple years of military service and some forced discipline might have done me a world of good but in this day and age.... PLEASE consider another route... I don't think you need the discipline quite like I did at your age.

My apologies for assuming you hadn't held down a full time job. At 16 I hadn't done anything of real consequence in the "real world" and I made the common mistake of basing an assumption on my own experiences. :)

As for what your dad thinks of you... I can't bring myself to tell you that it's unimportant... it comes from a profound concern for your welfare that he undoubtedly has. Number one on your list of people to please has to be yourself. Sometimes trying to measure up to someone else's standards is more aggravation than it's worth but I wouldn't be surprised if your dad doesn't think you're the fuck-up that you assume he does. The only person you need to measure up to is yourself.

One of my biggest mistakes growing up was not being very selective in choosing friends and as much as I'd have denied it at the time, they did influence how I behaved. People around me also drew some association that wasn't exactly flattering either. That probably hurt me as much as the lack of a degree... and is one way that military service would have helped... by forcing me out of the environment of my choosing. These are all life skills that took me a insanely long time to learn. Do you really need to subject yourself to the possibility of being shot at in an illegal war? For you to make it in the services you'd need to become a perfect soldier. If this is something you can live with then maybe it is worth considering. Somehow I think you're a better person than to need that level of brainwashing in order to retool your thinking.

Well the great thing about it is i wouldnt have to been shot at since i have asthma, i remember talking to my doctor and he was telling me i would get the nice comfy job in some air conditioned room because of it.

Well my dad did tell me that the path i was headed down was gonna put me on the streets. But im not sure how he can feel that way after him being a deadhead and all going to the shows.

Well I suppose the military could help finance your education, taking the financial burden off your parents. I don't want to get you to not believe what your dad says to you but take it with a grain of salt. Of course I CAN say that the world in which he following the Dead and the world now are very different. The political machinery has gotten much better at making homeless folks invisible. You may or may not actually heading in that direction in his eyes but society has never been all that nurturing to marginalized segments of the population and it is far less so now. He may be trying to put a scare into you which stems from a deep concern for your welfare. You'll never make your parents stop worrying about you- it's not something you should want anyway. :) You show pretty good sense here... so it's either the mother of all performances or you're mentally equipped to land on your feet whatever your future holds.

Happiness is way more important than riches. Find a line of work you can love. If you are scraping by but are insanely happy with your life you are FAR more successful than a high-powered executive pulling in six figures who is so stressed by trying to get more of the drug called money that he will be in his grave long before he can enjoy his financial gains in retirement.

You are at a critical crossroads in life and the fact that you're eyes are open to it puts you ahead of quite a few. There are other alternatives to the military... trade schools, different courses of study where you are... thinking this over and discussing it all with your dad may ease any fears he might have about the path you're on.

Of course you can find a rich girlfriend and marry into money! :D

If it's any consolation, I got into a decent school, have a 3.8 GPA, and perceive my future as mundanely bleak. I can't even manage to land an unpaid internship because I don't know anybody, so I can only imagine how stupid and boring my life is going to be after I graduate and have to start paying off $40,000 in student loans. US Colleges indenture kids to society through massive debt. I always have these wild fantasies about running away and avoiding the shitty life I'm probably going to be trapped into after another year, but then I remember that my parents cosigned on my loans and wouldn't be able to retire in that case.

What do you like to do? Do you like working with your hands? Do you like working outdoors? Do you like helping people? Think of something you're not going to think SUCKS after doing it every day for five or ten years.

One of the most impressive people I've ever met, a former coworker, took a one-year course in HVAC and applied himself diligently to his studies- after essentially mailing in his effort in the last two years of H.S. He wound up acing HVAC and immediately upon graduation started a job making significantly more than I'm currently pulling in.

Just an example for you to think about...

I got 3 F's this term after getting 3 B's and 3 C's last term. I stopped taking my adderall and started selling it this term. Its really sad how big my ADD problem is when i dont take my meds. This term i would look for ANY reason to leave class and just walk around the school getting in trouble all day, it was awful. I love my adderall because it puts me in control of myself, but the reason i stopped taking it is because it made me so anti-social and i just felt good being sober, even though i NEED something to treat my ADD during school.

So now, im in a huge predicament. Sell my adderall, make $8 per day, be sober, be social again, BUT fail 3 classes per term because of my disorder i cant help for the life of me. OR...Take my adderall, feel good and in control of myself all day, get decent grades, BUT we very antisocial and lose my chance to show all my friends/acquaintances my real self in high school causing a drop in my self esteem. I dont know what im gonna do.

The whole switchin up the dose thing doesnt work because if i take 20mg or 40mg either way i still get that adderall feeling/state of mind causing the anti-social behavior, along with the attention spand/good qualities it gives me. Know what Im sayin?
