I am somewhat knew to this board, I would let to get some input about some things I have been seeing. I am a senior in college right now, and I have met a lot of 'hippyes' on campus. Some of them I have became friends with, the others I have found some problems with. The ideology of hippy to me is someone that has their own beliefs and they are there own people, but they respect other people and try to love other people. Some of these 'hippys' I have met on campus seem to be so self-righteous and think of you as a 'horrible' person if they don't agree with your personal beliefs. For instance, I choose to eat meat. I have my own personal beliefs about that. Some of these 'hippies' look at me in disgust when they hear I eat meat. Shouldn't a true 'hippy' respect my decision? I also think these self-righteous hippies are doing what is 'hip' at the time, like different protestings, and not doing it because it is what they presonally believe in. It seems very hypocritical for a 'hippie', who is supposed to be an individual, give into the almost 'mainstream' hippie view. I have also met some 'hippie' types (at least they proclaim themselves that) that are really just messed up drug addicts. They call themselves hippies and act very far from that, especially when they are strung out on drugs. I think the reason hippies used drugs was to try and see things from a different perspective, you know 'expand their mind'. But i've seen a lot of self-proclaimed hippies who just care about selling more drugs so they can do more drugs. Has any other young hippies, especially in college, noticed this?
tsk tsk tsk... you have good points and in other words you have it so wrong... plus your English is terrible... not the worst I've seen, but you could do better...
Firstly, I'm not a young hippie but I'm not old either. And I feel about 16. The people you are talking about are fakes - hippie cardboard cutouts. For some people being a hippie is just something to hide behind. Nobody should think they're superior to anyone else just because they're a hippie, and drugs... don't get me started.
I'm not a hippy, buuuuuuut, I am a vegetarian, and would say..: Some of these 'hippies' look at me in disgust when they hear I eat meat. Shouldn't a true 'hippy' respect my decision? I think they have every right to look at you in disgust if they discover you eat meat. I mean, I don't do it personally (form odd faces) because its such a common practice (meat eating), but the facts behind the meat industry are pretty disturbing. So I don't think they would really respect your decision if they had done research about the meat industry. A hippy is outspoken, and theres really no true definition of a hippy i believe. So, I'd say its an individual who seperates themselves from the mainstream generic crowd. Which is why they would form an odd look on their face if they were a vegetarians and found out if you ate meat. But a lot of people who are omnivores and say they are hippies exist too. Its just research and facts that most veggies have obtained that cause them to not really respect your decision, so much as just understand the main reason as to why you eat meat (which i wont really get into because i dont want to start a veggie debate).
I don't know why... but there are people who are slightly hippyish... then there's people who are obnoxiously hippyish...
Orsino2 please elaborate. Sorry my english is terrible, it's easier to get things across with my voice then it is to type out my thoughts. I didn't know we were all English majors here. What am I so wrong about? I was asking a general question and you just come back with "you have it so wrong", that doesn't make any sense. I don't want to start a veggie debate either. But I have my reasons as far as that, and they make sense to me, which is why I think it should be respected. I don't eat ground beef. I don't eat much American food because American dishes (hamburgers, hotdogs, fast food, etc.) emphasize meat too much. I prefer asian food which seems to be more veggie based (stirfry). But just because you think the 'American meat industry' is corrupt does not make eating meat wrong. I have friends that are Agriculture majors, I have worked at the Pavilion, I have worked at the Center for Integrated Plant Studies, I have done my research. I think you missed my overall point. I was using the meat eating as an example. Them looking at me in disgust for eating meat makes just about as much sense as me looking at them in disgust for not eating meat. It's my choice to eat meat, it's their choice to not eat meat, we as individuals should be able to agree to disagree and then be able to find other common ground. if they call themsevles a 'hippie' then they should be able to respect me as an individual.
hippie is just a word, like anything else. having an identity helps some people find their niche. while some people would tell you being a hippie means being open minded, other people would say being a hippie means you protest for peace and freedom, other people would say being a hippie means you smoke pot, others might say being a hippie means you don't bathe, etc, etc, etc, etc. just as it is misleading for them to self proclaim themselves hippies (though i doubt they introduced themselves like 'hi my name is brian, i'm a hippie!' - i'd say it's more likely that you decided to group them as hippies because they dress a certain way that you have predecided is being a hippie, and yet are upset when they don't fit into every bit of the mold of what you think a hippie shuold be), it's unfair to judge a group by a title that is as broad and intangible as "hippie." if these people clash with you, you don't have to be friends with them. nothing about the title "hippie" means "i'll always agree with everything you think i should be like!" i wouldn't go on any crusades trying to revoke the label hippie for your own purposes
How on Earth did you get to be a senior in college writing like that? Did you buy all your papers online? My opinion of MSU has been greatly diminished.
This couldn't be more true. I have people call me a hippie sometimes. These are usually people who don't know me very well. I tell them that if they prefer to lump me into a stereotype thats there thing but I just go by Carl.
I think you have the right to be who you are whatever that may be to me lifes a game play it how ya wanna no limits!!
If you want to critique my writing then why don't you point out what I did that was soo bad. I happen to be in Engineering at MSU which is one of the hardest schools there, and my overall GPA is a 3.6 . I've never boughten a paper online, I've never flat out cheated on anything in college. So get over yourself and stop being so self-righteous. I am not an english major.
They have as much right to do their things as you have to do yours. Even after two years I still haven't figured out the definition of hippy. So it is impossible to say what fits and what doesn't. To say don't make judgements would be ridiculous, it is an unavoidable part of human nature. Doesn't mean we have to share, or act on them. Treat others as you wish to be treated. If people are happy, and their actions do not harm others. Then that is the best they could achieve. No one can ever understand all the reasoning behind another's decision, so don't presume to. Just leave them to it.
wilso.. dont let them get you down.. they treat everyone disrespectful and they are classless, to be kind.. they have such boring and uneventful lives that they have to flame everyone.. so if they have nothing on you but spelling.. they they are gonna jump on it like stink on chit.. for spelling so concider the source and brush yourself off and walk away with you dignity.. they have none.. Peace Shameless
1)Thats a little broad and untrue. They only disrespect those who disrespect them. Its sort of like wanting respect from a person you've raped, although I'm not saying that wilso has done anything as horrible. Its just an example of whatever you've done/said reflecting and coming back to you (in a way). 2)I'm sure there are more flaws to him than just spelling, although his spelling is curious since he claims hes a senior in college. 3)Uneventful lives and flame every single person who we disagree with? No. We just have this little right of ours called freedom of speech. You might have heard of it. And we also all have access to the computer. So whether online or offline, you'll find almost anyone will take advantage of freedom of speech. 4)Theres a difference between losing your dignity and arguing your point.
some of this may be true.. but the first ammendment doesn't give some the right to delibertly hurting some one else.. I think this has been addressed in another thread.. every one has the right to their OP and the freedom to express it..but in a civlilized manner.. dont you agree.. aren't we progressing in our spirituality.. I mean I hear several of the people in here professing to be Buddists.. and cussing and ridiculing and belittling everyone that makes a post.. calling them names and even telling them to die..can I or anyone take that seriously and show respect for them.. when they are so lost to even themselves.. why not try a little tenderness as wilson picket(?) says.. tolerence is right in there with love and peace.. ya know?
dont flatter yourself lodui.. your not the only self proclaiming Buddist in here.. but the shoe fits don't it..
