hi, just wonderin what kind of world would we be living in if the hippie movement had overthrown the goverment what would you have wanted it to be? what is your ideal world chears old hippie. eagerly awaiting reply
i been thinkin 'bout that to bro, but it's all just dreamin, it doesn't get you anywhere in the end. if you really wanna know what it is like you should go and try to live you're dream. otherwise you won't get any closer than the stories by people who have been their in the early days of the haight ashbury scene or something like that.. that's what came out of my daydreamin about the hippie utopia
If the hippy movement of the sixties within the US overthrew the US government...we'd be fucked by now. I can't see hippies running a super power of a country and not screwing it up. Don't get me wrong, I am a hippy. And I favor change from within. But total control for the last 30 years? Yeah...we'd be screwed.
I think the worst that would happen is nothing would ever really get accomplished. MAYBE. Hippys CAN be some of the best workers and doers. They can also be some of the most set in their ways. Another example of hippys having lived their beliefs for many years is Rainbow Gatherings. An ongoing experiment in working cooperatively WITH the system while living outside it.
everyone would go back to barterting and trading, farming, honeing a skill and/or craft. Kinda Amish without the aversion to technology
hippies cannot run a country in the way governments run a country right now, but if the hippie ideals work out the way believers think they will we won't need a government like that anymore, anywhere
The Rainbow Gatherings are one of the BEST, most successful examples of how Anarchy works; without leaders, without hierarchies, without yielding personal freedoms.
Let's see, we'd have a green economy and energy independence right now. I suppose you think that's a bad thing. The world would not be so polluted because American consumers wouldn't be buying shit from halfway around the world. We wouldn't have needed a Kyoto Treaty. There would be NO GLOBAL WARMING (or it wouldn't be nearly as bad) We wouldn't have had the following: The Gulf War The War in Afghanistan The War in Iraq The War on Drugs The War on Terrorism The War on Privacy The War on Freedoms 9/11 GM Foods Air Pollution Water Pollution Etc., Etc. The American people wouldn't be drowning in debt and losing their homes. We would have an economy fueled by HEMP POWER! The worst crisis we would face in America wouldn't be WMD or Terrorism, but satisfying the RAGING MUNCHIES! 40 years of PEACE AND LOVE would've been just awful, right? Instead America got what it deserved. When will they ever learn?
Umm Skip I don't know about this... potsmoking pacifists running the big pretty states?!?! A. We would have given it back to the Native Americans (right!?!?!) B. If we were too greedy to give it back to them we would have given it to anyone who threatened us if whatever military we had was run by peace loving hippies. I'm a peace loving hippie myself but I think America might seem a little irresistable for hostile takeover if we didn't even pretend to have a military maybe that's just brainwashing from the cops and military people in my family (my uncle just told me all the sit ins in the 60s were organized by communists who wanted to take over the country i think how is that true when it was the popular thing to do on any afternoon, but i didnt ask for any more details)
Any good hippy recognizes the fact that any society, hip or not, needs PEACEKEEPERS. If you have never been to a Rainbow Gathering and seen what happens when shanti-sena is called... We CAN deal with stuff, just not like the mainstream world does. I doubt we would have GIVEN IT BACK to the Native Americans, but we may think about doing NEW treaties where everybody benefits and the treaties are not ignored this time... Anyhow, there are a lot of REALLY KIND AND INTELLIGENT folks who wouldn't fit the definition of hippies, but they are definitely hip... A neighbor of mine is the kindest "rainbow brother" I have ever known. He is also NOT a hippy, he's a hillbilly with honor and a "code of the hills" which dictates he is friendly and will help ANYONE who needs help. I think it just boils down to good/evil, right/left, positive/negative, and being a "hippy" doesn't enter into it too much. I've met quite a few FAKE hippys...
we'd be saving about $1 Billion a year in the US by releasing the approximately 50,000 prisoners convicted of marijuana offenses, and about $8 Billion a year by not charging approximately 800,000 people annually of marijuana offenses.
I think it is brainwashing... you can't possibly believe there must be rule with an iron fist, or chaos. See Austraila/New Zealand.... brazil... etc. Now improve upon those governments by not being tied down to morals and religious beliefs... only what is just. If hippies ran the country - who would be making the weapons to supply our "enemies"? And more importantly, why would they even want to bother a peace-loving nation that embraces them? America would be a model for the civil world... yes, all it really takes is an open minded leadership - not one goof in a cowboy hat signing himself more power. That is progressive thought
if hippies were in power, all the boxes would be empty everybody tries to put things in boxes but hippy is about taking it out of the box
hi, i'm courious. but do you need to do drugs, to be a hippie ? i have done drugs one day, I mean i believe in peace and love, and everything else, wanting to end the wars, I believe Lennon was doing something good for this damn world we live in, but i'm just curious because i don't believe in doing drugs. you dudes know what i mean ?
no you don't in my opinion. there are enough threads around on this forum that already discuss this topic. personally i think its best to keep in mind that you don't need to do drugs to be or reach anything special because you can be and reach the same through other routes of life. if you wanna do drugs i think you should really look deep into your own eyes and be honest about why you wanna do them and sort out what's best for you to do and keep in mind that you only should do them in a particular pace of life, most of the time the adolescent pace, because doing drugs too long might do unnecessary damage. and furthermore, always try to be honest about your habits. it's hard to have a healthy drug habit, i guess most people would state that drugusage is no matter what a bad habit
