Reasons why I never can be but always will be a hippy:

Why I never can be a hippy:

    • I would vote Republican if I thought that the candidate was the most qualified and would do the best job (ex. Clinton vs. Giuliani)
    • I want to buy my underwear at Victoria’s Secret, simply because it is pretty.
    • I like high fashion magazines and runway shows.
    • I don’t want to live on a commune because I want to make enough money to travel.
    • When I do travel, I would prefer not to sleep on a bench the entire time I’m in Europe.
    • Most of the time, I would rather dress like Audrey Hepburn than Janis Joplin.
    • I think PETA is kind of scary.
    • I don’t think Communism will work on a country-wide scale.
    • I would rather dance with my niece than go to a protest.
    • I don’t like Jam bands
    • I can’t be a vegetarian because I like eating seafood when I’m at the coast too much.
    • I don’t think there’s anything wrong with eating meat when it was simply caught, not farmed (though, that only really applies to seafood with me. Venison, etc. is disgusting).
    • I don’t agree with Timothy Leery.
    • I will always get a Christmas tree.
    • I love shopping for gifts (at the mall, even)
    • At Starbucks, I get a grande, nonfat, extra hot, half pump vanilla mocha.
    • I like Starbucks, and think that it is capitalism at its best (really, check the employee benefits sometime.)
    • I watch “Project Runway” and “Top Chef”

Why I will always be a hippy:

    • I plan on registering Independent because I think you can’t trust any political party
    • I think that killing people is ALWAYS bad. Even if they’re a criminal. Even if you’re in the military.
    • I think organic food tastes better, but I would probably buy it even if it didn’t.
    • My heroes are Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Dorothy Parker, Jack Kerouac, and my family.
    • My ultimate top five favorite songs are: “Ballad of a Thin Man” by Bob Dylan; “Fumblin’ With the Blues” by Tom Waits; “Working Class Hero” by John Lennon; “When the Levee Breaks” by Led Zeppelin; and “Need U Tonight” by INXS
    • Sometimes, I do dress like Janis Joplin.
    • My favorite “store” in the world is located at the Portland Saturday Market.
    • I truly believe that deep down, everyone loves one another. I think that this just gets blocked by the fucked up world.
    • I don’t think democratic capitalism is the best government system. I think a new one needs to be created.
    • I think that the creation of art is the noblest thing a person can do.
    • Censorship may be the top on my list of hates.
    • I can’t turn my back on ANY religion. Somehow, I believe in them all.
    • I think that education should be the main focus of our country’s overhaul.
    • I’ve never supported this war.
    • I think that as soon as 9/11 happened, a comprehensive course in Islam should have been implemented in all public schools in order to ward of prejudice, ignorance, and misconceptions.
    • I think we are sacrificing too much freedom for security.
    • I don’t read tabloids, star magazines, or watch shows about celebrities.
    • I defend modern art’s place, though I don’t like most of it, myself.
    • “I may not agree with what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it” –Voltaire.
    • I hate no one.
    • I wear flowers in my hair.
    • I paint, write, and play music.
    • I would rather dance with my niece than go to a protest.
    • I defend gay rights, and don't really care if that will cause people to "accuse" me of being homosexual.
    • I don't think abortion is right, but I have the humility to realize that I may not know every situation, therefore I am pro-choice.
    • I will work for peace until I die.

Why so many rules of that is and t hat isn't; makes it all so complicated. I don't think there's a clear line to draw what is hippie and what isn't. Why does it even matter?

treehugger- many a person told me they are not environmentally sound

ayzcrava- it does not matter. That, in a round about way, is my point ( oh, and in your sig, it is "doorman"...unless you're doing that intentionally.)

I hate humans. All of them. Seriously. I'd love to see it all end right here and now.

Since that's not going to happen straight away I guess we should all just be as nice to each other as we can, because it makes life semi-bearable.

That's why *I* can never be a hippie but always be a hippie.

uh, no it's not....it is "Dormouse"....you know, Alice In Wonderland? The Dormouse with the Mad Hatter and the March Hare? "Doorman" just would make any sense with the whole "alice in wonderland "theme of the song.....

    exactly...

There is no "list"... all that matters is that your willing to do SOMETHING for anything other than the continual stripping of rights/$ in the elite pockets - and keep an open mind.

I agree with you on the meat thing. If a fish is caught, I feel it's alright to eat. However, animals that are raised in confined areas, with no real life, then killed to eat, is just wrong. It's denyng the animal of their freedom. I basically mean that I think it's okay if the animal lived a natural life before being eaten.

Depending on where you live, much of your fish could come from a fish farm...

Why do you feel hippiedom has rules! I break a lot of your 'rules for being a hippie', butv heck, I still am one! Just ask everybody I know!

ok, you're correct. I read alice in wonderland a long time ago and didn't remember a mouse, but looked up lyrics. I was unaware that dormouse was a type of mouse...my zoology skills are not up to par! :)

And, perhaps I should have been more clear originally, but they are not MY rules. This was supposed to be my clever way of critiquing all the rules hippies put on themselves. Hence, "why I never CAN be but always WILL be..." I meant to say that the only thing that matters is peace, love, art, life...

I think being a hippie is about breaking rules (not all, ofcourse)
And I don't think any hippie should set rules for themselves (I'm not saying that's what you're doing, but I'm agreeing that some hippies limit their life experiences, because they CAN'T do something, because they want to be a hippie)
Maybe someone trying too hard to be a hippie stereotype would have those rules

    :) Merry Christmas, btw :)

    peace and love

I think I know what you're point is... but you're young, be careful of validating yourself through the thoughts and opinions of others. Otherwise you might end up making a neatly bulleted list of why you are and aren't what you are and aren't.

    To the OP:

I think your honesty and the way you stand your ground are pretty hippie-like qualities, anyway..

    Keep truckin'. :)
