i was just talking to my friend (over msn) about this... Apparently shes all over the news... And not only was she killed, her dad too and they tried to kill her as soon as she returned from her exile but didnt manage to. But i dont know much about it...
Rest In Many Pieces I think it was :& That was bad taste, I'm going to apologise for it straight away and say that though I was generally sceptical of her motives for returning to Pakistan, she ultimately died for the profession and vocation of politics. She could have been a stabilising influence and her assassination does not bode well for the future of Pakistan or indeed the wider world....
Foolish, perhaps, or brave. Whatever motives she had for coming back - and personally I think they were as much for her career as for her country - and as much as we might question her convictions, that she returned and stayed on the campaign trail after the first attempt on her life showed she had the courage of those convictions....
I think she was so brave and she wanted to make her country a better place. Unfortunately, they killed her for that.
Not yet, they cant even agree on how she died, either gunshots, shrapnel or fracturing her skull on the sunroof handle...
did bagdad bob get a new job working for musharraf? anyway, my mother is really taking this whole thing pretty hard. it's impossible to talk to her.
She certainly spread herself around a lot, that's for sure. :leaving: Very sad that she was killed, and it goes to show there's still big problems in Pakistan, probably because it's pro-West stance is fuel to the fire for the Muslim radicals.
isn't it a little unhealthy that they have these political dynasties in South Asia like the Gandhis and the Bhuttos? After all in the US for instance, you wouldn't get someone running for President just because their father or husband had the job before them. Er ...
Damn. I cannot believe that she was assasinated. A beacon of hope and solution for Pakistan, now lay slain in a graveyard. Rip! Pakistan have unleashed a wrath of anger. Anger and vengence. They will fight each other and riots will continue until many are dead. But, then as said, Pakistan is well and truly finished. I would say to the EU and other countries, Do not let dwell refugees. For they have all played a part. Now must face the consequences for their defiance against Benizer Bhutto. Let justice finally catch up with those responsible. Let them be paraded in front of the media, be tried, convicted and jailed.
Crossposted from elsewhere on the board: I know you guys dont have the same political leanings as myself, but www.marxist.com carries very good analysis of the situation in pakistan, esp given that the international has its biggest group there, and we even have MP's within the Pakistani Peoples Party. Benazir Butto was certainly not the answer to Pakistans problems; I'd liken the PPP very much to the Labour Party of the UK. It was founded upon a solid, socialist programme, looking out for working people, with a clear set of transitional demands. It has since been hijacked by right wing careerist elements, but due to the Working Class's inherent association with this party, it can be changed and brought back to the left by the workers themselves.
Once I was travelling back from a demonstration against the war in Afghanistan with a coach load of SWP members. I asked one of them what they thought should be the solution to Afghanistan's problems. They said a democratic socialist government. Of course, that would be ideal. But it's a ludicrously unrealistic solution. We have to work with the tools we have available. In the current climate, the best we can expect to be able to do is prop up a strong politician who can keep the extremists out of power. And sometimes you have to have less than ideal allies. The struggle against fundamentalism in Muslim countries, for now, is more important than the class struggle....
