So, here's the thread to discuss all things Jeff Noon related. I figured I'd create a thread for him, even if the only people that post in it are Fountains of Nay and myself. I've got a review of Vurt up on the UK Group page, and it's also somewhere on one of these threads. Reading Vurt got me hooked into his fantastic style of writing. I was then recommended Pollen, and recently finished reading this. It was FANTASTIC! There is a definitely bizarre way he manages to bring in the same characters from previous books, while telling a whole new story, that doesn't really ever connect directly to the previous story you read in the last book. Sounds confusing, maybe; but it's not really, and it just builds this whole new world in your mind (or at least it has in mine). In Pollen, we find a whole new cast of characters (and some from Vurt) including an XCab driver named Boda, and a flower-girl named Persephone. I don't really want to give away too many details, but in this book we find the Vurt world is trying to creep into the real world and take over. The dreams desire to become more than dreams and want to experience life as you and I know it. There are corrupt cops, tragic loses, and lots of sticky yellow pollen infecting everything. The book is a crazy trip through this surreal cyber punk world following Boda as she tries to figure out who she really is and what she needs to do in order to try to save the world she loves and feels so deeply connected to. If you like sleeping however, don't try reading any of Noon's books before bed. Not because they are scary; but because you just don't want to put them down.
Nice review there Jeff Noon is the man. I'd recommend you to read "Nymphomation" next or "Falling out of Cars". Don't read "Automated Alice" until you've read Nymphomation...it will make for a much better read and inter-linking!
i've now read Nymphomation and Automated Alice. I loved both of them! in fact just bought a copy of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland & Through the Looking Glass as Automated Alice made me want to read those. I love how intertwined; yet completely different the worlds he creates are.
Ahhh wickedness I love them both, although I found that Nymphomation had a slightly disappointing ending. Have you read "Falling out of cars" yet? I also recommend "Needle in the Groove" (IF YOU CAN FIND IT)
Funny you should say that ... i just last week bought both Falling out of Cars and Needle in the Groove off of Amazon haven't started either yet though. but they are both now sitting here waiting to be read. glad you saw this thread ... no one else seems to be into Noon we must convert them!
