I think what matters is: Why is it important to you to be called "Native American"? What do you symbollically gain from the term native? How does it aid in your identity and sense of self?
You may be: Culturally native - You assume native status by default of being born into the specific culture... as such you ARE native american, because you are native to the culture of the united states of america. Physically native - Native solely by virtue of genes... in this you are truly "native" only to your regional evolutions. Pick one or the other and roll with it. You are where you are and you were born of your parents, there is no more to it. Those who populated the european designated "americas" before europeans "claimed" these lands have no more claim to them than any human... and no less. Humans cannot "own" land, the only ownership we have is our minds... very simple ideal that few can truly grasp. Politically Correct truly means to allow for any and all opinions.... it DOES NOT mean conformation to a set of values as defined by whoever coined the term - nothing "correct" about that.
We are by definition indegenous to all lands, because all lands are the earth. The dirt my house stands is not exactly the same as it was 14,000 years ago, nor is it in the same relative location.
I need to get a fishing license. They're only 10$ or some crap like that, aren't they? I'll get one in the spring.
Since the continent was named for Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian, shouldn't aboriginal people be called native something else?
most of my aboriginal friend call themselves by their tribe or plain ol' Indian. they don't mind, so long as you're respectful.
I'd think that any Euro-referenced means of identifying an aboriginal person might be grating and the lack of reaction can be construed as patient tolerance at best.
you'd think. i worried about it at first. but nope, not the case. a couple here and there, but living in farmington is very navajo heavy. they all called each other indian. the local native radio station was KNDN. layin' it down for the brown in f-town. i loved that.
it shits me when people say the only 'true australians' or people you can call australian, are the aboriginals. dude, i was born in australia, there for i am australian. yea.
