take astronomy. this is soooo freaking cool. quantim mechanics, space-time continuum, black holes, infinities........you'll realize that we know nothin'
How tough is the class though? I wanted to take it because I like space and all that kinda stuff, but I figured it would be kinda hard.
things like that depress and facinate me at the same time. even looking up at the stars for too long makes me feel insignificant, like my life means nothing and if i died, or if the world exploded right then and there it wouldn't matter. i don't like feeling small. but if i can avoid that train of thought, it is a very interesting subject, i agree.
well, it is humbling in the sense that we are tiny and insignificant, but it makes you gasp in awe that the universe is this well-oiled, fine-tuned "machine" in that chaos works together to produce something so.......i dont know what to call it. Unexplainable. And if you might not believe in a higher being, this class will mae you start asking questions that scientists cannot answer. On the subject of it being hard.....not really. Im only taking a 101 and 102 class, so we dont have to get into the mathermatics of it. It is a lot of physics, but when its all put together, it makes perfect sense.
it's amazing enough at how insignificant we are, but it is equally amazing at how significant we make ourselves. i already knew we know nothing, though i'm sure i came to my conclusion differently. all of that being said. the only astronomy class here is exceptionally difficult. so far i've had a good experience when i took my first religion class. i find myself looking back to those days which were only one year ago-ish. the world was in several different views for me. it was awlsome. i miss those days, that class, and that professor. damn.
"...looking up at the stars for too long makes me feel insignificant..." "Fifteen years ago I looked at the stars, And the bastards spoke to me, 'You are as useful as a urinal in a convent,' And I thought 'Is it that bad?' Food for thought, now I'm sad..." -Mike Keneally
Another cool class is Calculus III - I'm not sure what it would be called at other colleges. The class is about 75% 3D graphs and understanding the x,y,and z coordinates in relation to math. I remember after figuring out an equation and drawing the resulting graph on the board (which took about 15 minutes) my teacher stood back and said, "man, I'd like to have that blown into some glass!" Peace out.
We just learned today that the universe used to have 10 dimentions, and now maybe 6......and that our galaxy/universe could be inside a black hole......this stuff keeps getting crazier and crazier.....
have you talked about white points (or something similar i can't exactly remember what they are called)? It is basically what they think might be at the other end of a black hole and how our universe was created from a black hole. I love this type of stuff...
A white hole, maybe? Its like a black hole, but spits out stars instead of "eating" them? We didnt get into that, but I did see a show about them on the History channel. (They havn't found one yet, but the laws of relativity mathematically allow for them to exist, now they just gotta find one)....show's called The Universe and is a pretty good show if you like this kinda stuff
what evidence were you offered that this is/could be true? this is the first i've heard this theory. sounds very interesting.
Yeah i was watching that. It's the same theory of the white holes. They think our universe was created by a black, meaning our universe was a white hole.
i was only taking 101 and 102 courses, so we never really touched on the mathematics that would explain something like this.....I wouldnt be able to understand it if we did! I kept thinking about the bathtub scene in Animal House where Mr. Jennings was trippin' out Pinto on the notion that our universe could be an atom in the fingernail of some giant being, and an atom in our fingernail could be one tiny universe......"This is too much!! Could I buy some pot from you?"
I couldn't understand the mathematics either of a phenomena that complex so thanks for not taxing my brain further dollyd. once while meditating, i was on an astral journey and saw that giant being you referenced. it was andy rooney.
My school is offering astronomy next year so I immediately signed up like 2 days ago, I just saw this thread now... I've always found the subject extraordinary and I'm so glad that I'll learn something worthwhile for once...
I find that geology classes blow my mind, which is probably the reason I am majoring in it! Peace and love
I find any science subject such as physics, astronomy, etc., even the life sciences like molecular biology as interesting. Also, the study of fractals, etc., even chaos theory, I find fascinating.
I'm taking astronomy next year for a semester. I'm sad that it's only for a semester, astronomy fascinates me. I love watching that The Universe show on tv, it just boggles my mind. The universe is just so incredibly huge and we're so small, I love to think about it. I'm only in highschool though, so I'm sure my class won't be as in depth as a college course would be. edit: hippy_chick666: that's what my sister says. she's in a geology class and she says it's soo cool and fascinating.
