I use the word a lot just to describe the youth counterculture that somewhat resembles the movement, but people keep telling me that there really aren't any hippies under the age of 60. Do we have a word for the herb-smoking, unostentatious-but-out-of the-mainstream clothed, vegetarian, open-hearts and open-minds youth of today?

So what is a young hippie?

    I call us "neohippies."
Some (me) smoke pot, but some (probably half) are straight edge.
Our musical styles vary. We listen to classic psychedelic and acid rock, but also listen to heavy metal, goth, and a hell of a lot more. Hate the mainstream clothes, open minds, open hearts, open eyes.
Some don't dress as the average hippy, but others have physical ways of telling.
I, for one, wear Led Zep and Hendrix t-shirts and weird shit all he time, have long hair, fedora.
Occasionally we trace back to our Flower Child ancestry and wear the traditional stuff. Love beads, peace signs, purple sunglasses, loose shirts. But mostly we'll wear darker, "metal-er" clothes.
Political views are mirrored from the early hippy, and basically political and global mindsets are the same. Change "Nam" with "The Middle East" and "The Whales" with "Everything."

Eh. I used to use the word neohippie, but it is so varied that it seems to lose meaning. The description fits me pretty well. I used to be straight-edge (still don't drink... I'm just going to keep it to psychedelics), I listen to a lot of music.... basically everything there.

I think we are as diverse as the original hippies, but not nearly as united in cause. We all have our own battles these days. I, like many, trace my hippie roots to my parents, who were some of the originals in Eugene, Oregon. They raised me with the ideals of loving the earth, standing up for what we believe in, and living in a natural, beautiful way. Drugs don't have all that much to do with it at the root of the investigation. They enhance, but do not create.

I'm not sure that there's a new word.. hippie still seems applicable. Sure, we're different to the originals, but so what?
Time to reform the Youth International Party.. yippie power! Who's with me?

I'm a young hippie. I dress in long floaty skirts, old jeans, Flowery tops, rainbow cloured things. I almost always wear a hat, and will especially now I'm growing my hair out in preparation for dreadlocks. I actually appear straight edge, but I drink and will smoke pot when I finally get the chance (probabaly August, sniffle). I don't have access to booze and drugs, my friends aren't into all that, one's straight edge, one's an evangelist, one is just slightly odd, like me, and that's why we get along. I'm vegetarian, I crochet, I buy organic things, eat wholefoods (yet binge on chocolate), burn incense sticks and just love peace and care for the environment.
Damn I sound like a washing powder advert.

im with ya raven! Woo hoo!

But anyway, I stopped smoking pot, only because it makes me sick, dont know why but anywho...I wear what I want, or nothing at all. I believe in world peace and loving & tolerating everybody. Im pescatarian, not vegetarian...hmmmm I guess the term hippie would apply to the younger ones as well. :)

Yeah, we're hippies.. I smoke pot (when I can get it) I drink, wear bright colours and go barefoot where possible (not in our city though.. too much broken glass around).
I buy organic - from a worker's cooperative no less - and eat mostly raw vegan and vegetarian food (I do a GREAT carrot salad, fulla vitamins and omega-3's and 6's).
I believe in peace, love and freedom for all people - the two-legged people, the four-legged people. The people of the earth, the sea and the sky. Freedom, peace and love; that's what it's all about people.

Around here. The young hippies (like me) we all try to open our minds to new perceptions of thinking. Listen to psychedelic music, take adventures in the mountains/trails etc... Were against people who do things that are main stream. like wear hollister. BUt there is an exception. A kid we kno dresses hollister at school to get girls but i never see him with any. And out side of school he is cool as hell. We have tryed to talk him out of it. BUt of course he doesnt stop.

People who look mainstream and do mainstream things can't be hippies? Hippies are against people who aren't different (which all hippies are)?

I am a young hippie myself, and I do admit I have a slight dislike for "Preps" or the mainstream followers. But being against it is a different story,to me they're just doing what people did back in the 60s just differently with a different influence. You should, instead of opposing, embrace them as you would any other person. Being against things is what tears humans appart. Remember that.

I want to change the world. I wear crazy clothing, mostly funky overalls.

I think "new hippies" or young hippies are good terms. but its go to be the mindset.

    peace and love peoples.

I myself, am probably the biggest hippie in my school. My favorite musicians are Bob Dylan, Grateful Dead, & The Beatles. I wear skirts that go down to my ankles, a hemp drug rug, jeans that i sew patchs on, make my own tie-dyes, & wear my vegan-friendly arizona birkenstocks all year round [with/without socks haha.] I am extremly interested in eastern religion & philosophy. I meditate, & recomend it to everyone. I'm a active participant in my school's environmental club, anti-war advocate, very artistic. Music, drawing, painting, writing, reading, smoking, & sleeping.. my life :] I'm an open-minded, environmentalist, vegetarian, anti-war advocate, with a flower in my hair, love in my heart & a smile on my face.

I still think we're considered hippies. Just because they were promenate in the 60's, & faded away, to our new generation, with a small population remaining, doesn't mean we're anything different. Definatly lonlier in our quest of a ganja filled, peaceful society, with no corrupt government or social injustice.

    Yippies! need to reunite.

There are too many laws now days to live as a hippy. If you do you'll proably end up in jail for something dum like not wearing shoes, if things keep going like they are. As it is police can search your house without a warrent if they think you're a terroist. Freedom is being taken away, it's up to us, the younger generation to try and change it.

I believe I sat in on the committee meeting that invented the concept... after hours and hours of coffee soaked and hallucinogen enhanced discussion we decided that we wanted to mix youth and hippies but were stumped as to what we could call them. "Terminal strategists", and "rotting stumps" were discussed and rejected as well as "copper fuzz domes" and "Reese Witherspoons". We nearly agreed upon "fuzzy layer clouds" but tabled the notion lest meteorologists and neon nun prostitutes become offended for some unforeseen reason. After getting side tracked on what a great band name "neon nun prostitutes" would be one of the board members, who was dressed as someone's imaginary friend, demanded that we find some sort of name for these young hippies before he lynched himself with a strand of overcooked angel hair pasta.
