im bored right now and i just thought that i would see how people connect to the internet whether its dial up, cable high speed, dsl, wireless, etc.... im going to be moving here soon so i wont be able to get high speed cable internet anymore. im not sure what im going to be able to get out at the new house. i know i can use my cell phone as a modem for a little while but only at nights because it uses my minutes.

so how do you connect to the internet?

I use DSL in America.

In Central America I have a Satellite dish that gets the internet as fast as DSL.

well, ive got a service from verizon called "National Access Broadband" on my laptop.

its a wireless card (not wi-fi) that plugs into your USB port, and you can get hi speed pretty much anywhere. the downside is that you cant use it for like xbox live gaming or anything. but its badass being able to take your laptop with you anywhere you go and getting broadband internet wirelessly.

its like almost $60 a month for unlimited usage, and the service is very consistent and reliable. its worth it to me, because there isnt much money in the area i live, so DSL and cable arent available here.

I have a wireless card.
What's the difference really as long as it's not a modem? They're all wireless, right (dsl, lan, cable, etc)?

I have at&t DSL, but I used to have cable. DSL is much better than cable.

I get 10 mb/s through insightbb, but I believe they were taken over by comcast.

I don't think their all wireless. Those all use modems. But you can have wireless access. I'm not computer wiz, but my boyfriend is. I sort of have an idea of the workings of a computer, but I'm better with the internet/computer documents and stuff.

Are you kidding? DSL is slow as shit, and when you get into the 10-15 mb/s range you get charged out the ass.

my dsl is super fast.. My song downloads sometimes finish in 15 seconds.

and before with cable they would take up to a few minutes to finish.

Hahahaha. ok.

DSL-internet through a phone line. The phone line connects to a dsl modem, then connect an ethernet cable to your modem and the otherside to a modem.

Cable-internet comes through a coaxial cable and connects to a modem, then you connect an ethernet cable to your modem and the otherside to the router.

Lan-Local Area Network is the network you get when you and everyone in the house is connected to the router wireless or wired.

Router-connects to the modem via an ethernet cable, and 4+ ethernet cables connect to the router, and connect to computers. Or wireless signals are sent from a wireless router.

You can also have a wireless card from your cell phone company, allowing you to connect to the net from anywhere, signals are sent to and from satelites.

yea dial up is hell!!!! It's basically worthless. Checking mail and instant messenger is about the only stuff you can do on it. I had dial up for about a year here after the cable got shut off, and before we ordered dsl.

when i ordered this service, they said it wouldnt work for online gaming. but my friend has satelite, and he was told it wouldnt work for gaming, and he uses xbox live all the time so im not sure.

You will need to share your wireless connection, then plug an ethernet cord into your laptop and to the xbox, and all is good.

If you are going through a cell phone company it is usually much to slow to play games.

Most people who know anything about computers are self-taught including myself.
