After 3,5 years as a dread head I'd like to unlock my hair. Any tips on how to do it? The way I do it is so slow, it takes forever, because I have a lot of hair.. So far I've noticed my hair opens better if I apply oil to it. It's about all I know... so any help is welcome.

well, i don't know how you feel about cutting them, but i heard that if you cut your dreads in half, they unravel quite a bit and you can finish it off with conditioner and a comb.

I sliced mine open with a razor blade and brushed them out... it too alot of work and really thinned my hair. I looked like a cavewoman for about a week but then it started to tame. It takes patience.. but less then it does to grow them

I combed mine out after about 3.5 years. It took a long time...as in months (but I was also lazy about it) Each one took hours upon hours. I used tons of conditioner and some hemp lotion i had. Oil would probably help, I didn't think of that at the time.
I just picked at it w/ a metal comb, starting from the bottom. Its not so bad until you get to the roots. That shit hurt a little. And you will be left with a huge pile of old hair gunked up w/ conditioner and dead skin. MMMmmm.
I was left with hair about 4 inches past my shoulders (and that's after I cut off about 4 inches to even it out) and it was in excellent condition. It was thicker and healthier than before I had dreads :)
It didn't last long, about 6 months and my hair decided it wanted to be in dreads again.

Yeah, I'm afraid that will happen to me too. I love my dreads but I still feel like change so I guess sooner or later I will open them. It is better, though, if I open them than if I end up cutting them. I guess I would feel terrible if I did that..

use lots of conditioner and it helps when the hair is wet. Use a fork?
