I was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas as to what the meaning might be behind a recurring theme in my nightmares. Usually my nightmares are pretty straight forward and easy to interpret, but this one confuses and disturbs me.

The nightmares don't always have the same location, but they all involve a bathroom. I guess I should say I tend to be more than a little frightened of bathrooms when I am concious. Perhaps that has something to do with it. Or maybe these nightmares are why they frighten me when I am awake. But for some reason or another, I tend to get the idea that there are dead people in bathrooms. Different bathrooms have different dead people, but they are specific and unique to their bathrooms.

In my nightmares, I have to use the bathroom and this one is the only one around - otherwise I wouldn't be in it. It's disgusting - think the creepy bathroom from the movie Silent Hill, only huge - the size of a locker room. The stalls are usually huge, too, and each stall has a different, disgusting, dicrepit toilet in it. Some toilets look like those huge sinks people have in old basement laundry rooms. Some toilets look like regular toilets, only they're huge. All of them are disgusting and covered in grim and no two are alike. The bathrooms are also always dark or very poorly lit.

Sometimes there are other people in the bathrooms, acting like it's a perfectly normal bathroom. Usually there are no stall doors, or the toilets that do have doors are backed up and unusuable. I am always forced to use a toilet in the middle of the room because any that would allow privacy or that look less disgusting are all backed up. If there are people in the room, they don't react or seem to think it odd that a girl would be using the bathroom in plan sight of everyone, and in my dreams, I always have this internal dialogue about how there's nothing unnatural with nakedness and I should be comfortable with myself and not ashamed if people see me naked. (Sometimes at this point I realize I am naked and wake up).

The whole time I am in the bathroom, I am terrified. Not the kind of scared where I fear for my life, but I am frightened of something that feels supernatural and doesn't have a tangible name or definition. There is a constant threat in the bathroom, but the need to pee (it's always pee) forces me to stay in there.

A little about me - I'm 20 years old, a female, and a college student. I'm quite open minded, very hippie-ish, but I am in the military and have peed behind boulders in the middle of the woods with no problem. I've also showered with other women and it hasn't bothered me. I'm not really the type to be ashamed of nakedness, but I don't think I'll be joining a nudist colony any time soon, you know?

For the life of me, I cannot figure out what my nightmare is supposed to mean, but that fact that it is recurring tells me that it means something. Historically, my recurring nightmares have helped me to acknowledge fears and anxieties that I didn't know I had. (For example, I had a recurring nightmare about the end of the world right before I left for basic training, causing me to acknowledge just how anxious I was about leaving my friends and family and starting a new life in the "outside world".)

If anyone has any hints or ideas, I'd be appreciative. I hate nightmares and I know that once I acknowledge whatever it is I'm trying to tell myself, the nightmares will go away and I'll probably be a little more comfortable in the waking world as well.

P.S. Words cannot describe how absolutely filthy this bathroom is.

I have dreams about filthy bathrooms! I thought I was the only one.
Not every night, but several times a year (and more when I was younger) I will dream of having to pee very badly (probably because I need to in real life). Like you said, different bathrooms, but they all look like they come from silent hill. And it is the only one around, otherwise you wouldn't be using it. Well, that's exactly how it was for me. I'll go in, and there'll be poop on the floors and the toilet and grime everywhere. Sometimes there are a million stalls and when I try to sit on the toilet it might be too tall and I end up pissing on myself because I can't balance properly (usually wake up after that). I am always self-conscious about using these bathrooms because there isn't any privacy (they might have stalls but the cracks in them are huge), or sometimes no stall at all. I don't have a problem peeing in public restrooms in my waking life.
Once, a very long time ago, I was in one of these very dirty bathrooms (I swear, they look abandoned, like the ones in the Saw movies, except even dirtier) and I go into one of these stalls to find a creature. It blends in with the grime on the walls. It just looked like a shapeless little piece of goo. But it scared me, because it moved. I think it jumped at me, squealing!

I would think that peeing represents relieving oneself of a problem and the dirty bathrooms mean the subconscious with all of its dirty little secrets (which is usually denoted by caves and tunnels in dreams.)

It could therefore represent a conflict in conscience, that you want to stay true to yourself (peeing) and are afraid that evil in the world will change you, that you will become jaded and without conscience.

Otherwise, feces usually denote money coming.

it's not something i have recurringly, but i do have dreams in which bathrooms, sometimes more or less public ones, and sometimes disfunctional or malfunctioning ones when in the dream i need to use them is something that happens.

bathrooms where the crapper's floor seal leaks and rots away part of the floor, or part of the floor is already rotted partially away. not revealing anything scarier then the one story drop to the floor or ground or foundation, at least a full level's distance below.

but it isn't something that happens often, and when it does, its generally in a larger context of all the other things going on in the rest of it, not so much that one thing itself.

well that's the thing about my dreams too, there's always more going on in them then i can take back with me to tell anyone in this world. i mean its just like you spend a day in this world and wake up in another one and try to tell someone there everything that happened in your day here. its that same way with my trying to tell about what happens in my dreams there. which is why you don't see me often attempting to.

    =^^=
