ive been wondering this for a while. i assume not, because its called an atypical psychedelic, but I read that the only true psychedelics are tryptamines, phenethylamines and piperazines. is that bullshit? what would it be classified as?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salvinorin_A From what I read it isn't even close to any "classical" type of hallucinogen. It acts on opioid receptors as well. Probably why it's so goddamn strange.
first off typtamine is an alkaloid salvia is not. The chemical compostions are different in the sense that they are prone to effect various receptors of the brains, including our thc receptors. BUT, the charachterisitics are quite similar to tryps but they are not connected yet, more study is needed to offically tie this plant to it. When and if it does salvia will be banned across the board. Lets hope enough biochemists can give us the truth on this wonderful gift.
Honestly I fine Salvia to be a frightening experience. It overpowers pretty much anything. Alcohol cannot match Salvia..... It completely phases the alcohol out. I have not seen a drug that can overpower Salvia and I doubt there is one that will. I can't believe that its still legal....=O
salvinorin-a primarily binds kappa-opioid receptors (agonist) with very strong affinity. in medicine, these receptors are associated with psychosis, similar to the sigmas (though the effects are quite different). salvinorin lacks the indole moiety inherent to tryptamines, and has a diterpenoid structure which vaguely resembles cannabinoid structures, and as you mentioned, isn't considered an alkaloid, because it lacks amino groups. instead, it has a slew of carbonyls and oxygens, which give the overall molecule an immense electrostatic character. indeed, it's not exactly a euphoric compound, and I don't see abuse becoming widespread, but due to the alarmist nature of media, it wouldn't surprise me if the DEA did initiate emergency scheduling on a whim.
amen to that. haven't tried it either, but I know it like an old friend. going on a 13-year obsession with this molelcule, it's biochemistry and neuropharmacology. considered medicinally unimportant, in low levels it may be one of the perfect equalizers.. a natural anxiolytic. In higher doses, it's probably the most visually stunning compound out there, dissociation parallels, if not rivals salvia, based on reports I've come across. I've had some whacked salvia trips, real ego shredders... but the whole scene was vague, and grossly distorted. I was completely disoriented. salvia is mad otherworldly and dysphoric. dmt probably takes you for a cosmic ride.
I know of no drug or botanical that has been banned because of what it does in cell culture or because of molecular genetic linkage. Yet drugs are banned due to theoretical SARs. When will government catch up with pro football and fix blown calls. To infer that because it doesn't bind to 5HT2a receptors means that it has no psychedelic value is as incorrect as it is to infer that because it binds to opiate receptors it kills pain.
DMT does not pwn salvia at all, in terms of 'power.' I think if there's anything that qualifies as power, it'd be potency and salvinorin is more potent. DMT's just easier to get an experience from and probably a more pleasant one at that, as Salvia can produce a trip that has you questioning the validity of the unvierse as you know it.. not to mention uncomfortable physical feelings. If I had either readily available at any given time (well I do, actually), and felt like a quick trip, I'd probably go with DMT more often.
DMT and Salvia both can crazily replace reality with a very altered state. Yet they are different in that tryptamines are infamous for gradual morphology, while salvia is more like being transplanted. There was no feeling of movement, of traveling. The feeling was as if the universe had momentarily stopped expanding and without seeing it develop everything was different--fresh, jamais nu, and ancient. There was a strange fairly mild histaminergic feeling as well. I adopt the physical definition for power, w/dt. Potency is not the same as power, this is key, it is the supremum (or infinum) of dose x effect.
