    Hello all....

I'm graduating college this May, after which I naturally have no clue what I'm doing. I feel that after being in school for 95% of my life, I desperately need to learn more life smarts, not just book smarts. I am looking to travel, without a plan or a destination, as cheaply as possible. For adventure's sake, I prefer to travel via walking/hitchhiking/trainhopping. While I don't have a particular destination or plan, I'm thinking of eventually heading south, to Latin America, where money will go farther. I'm also not opposed to finding odd jobs along the way to support myself.

Some things you should know about me:

-I had a liver transplant 2 years ago. This means two important things: one, I never drink, and only dabble in pot once in a blue moon. I have come within 7 days of dying, I know how precious life is, and I'm not about to spend my life intoxicated. Two, I have to maintain my supply of prescriptions and get a blood test every now and then. It's annoying, but it's my only ball-and-chain I have to deal with, so I consider myself lucky.

-I am NOT doing this to "stick it to the Man," or to get back at my parents (I love my family), or for any other negative reason. I am doing this solely because I wish to learn more about myself and about humanity. I am seeking personal and spiritual growth, not just a good time.

    Who I'm looking for:

-Anyone who does NOT fit perfectly into a stereotype. Yes, if I had to pick a typecast, I'd be a hippie...but it's a loose fit, I am who I am. I don't have dreads, I don't smoke weed all the time, I'm not a vegetarian, I'm not obsessed with the idea of world peace, and I don't hate Republicans. Please be a real human being, not a stereotype.

-For reasons of balance, I guess I'd prefer a male, but I am NOT looking for a relationship or any type of sexual encounter. Just a friend on the journey of self-discovery.

-Please have positive reasons for wanting to do this, not just because you hate school or you're trying to prove something to someone. I don't care if you drink, or toke on occaision, but don't turn it into a habitual thing. Please be mature, responsible, able to support yourself financially, and laid back.

Details about when and how to meet up can be resolved later, I'm currently just seeing what's out there. I have friends and family spread out throughout the US and the world, so I have connections. I am looking to do this for an unspecified amount of time. I might hate it and only last a month, or I might do this for another 15 years. Please be flexible in that regard. I plan on leaving sometime after May. Let me know if you're interested.

    -Kate

Sounds really cool, I'm doing almost exactly the same thing, ending up in Patagonia I think, but I'm leaving Toronto in a week or two. It's a shame, you sound like you know what's going on. Good luck, peace n love n shit.

I graduate at this time next year... Probably work for a bit, then either go go straight to college/profession or travel the world+find work/profession.

I want to vagabond around, just i know none of my friends are willing to do it too, and would rather continue life where they were born. Thats not appealing to me, because you'd pretty much know where you'll be until you die, to me thats seeing a dead end from way down the road.

    Alicia-

My name is Kevin-I live on a 40 foot sailboat in Philadelphia. I see you've been sailing.

I've been slowly fixing it up and I'm hoping to leave soon. Not sure where-but I don't think destinations are important.

    This is me- http://www.hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=273792

I've read your posting a few times-each time more impressed.

    Good like with the trip,

Im a senior in hs and will probably be doing something similiar before going to college. I once met someone who biked across the country in 3 months and had alot of good stories to tell about it. I want to do something similiar, like a combination biking, walking and train hopping trip to nowhere in particular. I dont know about hitchhiking, though, seems pretty risky.

The though of being a vagabond/hobo for a while to me is just awesome. I had a teacher who once while working for a newspaper covered the annual hobo convention in Britt, Iowa. Goes to show there are still some hobos left.

I'd really like to do some personal traveling and exploration myself. It seems like although I have moved around quite a lot and have lived in 3 different continents and many more places, there is still so much more to experience when not being pressured to reach a particular goal or destination. I am only just coming to terms with my worldview and relation to the world but just like the OP, I've been in school all my life. While this hasn't necessarily limited my experiences and knowledge about the way the world works with all of this technology and flow of ideas around us, traveling for the sake of traveling is new to me. It'll probably be another 2-3 years or so before I can actually do this some time before medical school, but in the mean time I'll get to go to Thailand. To the OP, I think you have the right idea and reasons about going about this and I'd like to share ideas with you, or anyone else who is interested for that matter. Email me at arandomname@gmail.com.

i cannot leave in may. more twords september i could help you walk through latin america. im not one for being intoxicated often either, but i am vegetarian. the backpacking experience with me is more along the extreeme minimalist lines, and i have done it for years at a time, both for pleasure and out of need. as far as your medical condition combined with the latin america scene, i will trust you to take care of finding out where your meds will be available before i cross the border.
