My girlfriend is 17 years old (closer to 17 1/2 to be more exact) and has been thinking about going on birth control to regulate her period.
Recently, especially on this forum, I noticed a lot of backlash against the pill.
So I guess what I want to know...

Those of you who have or are using it, what are your personal opinions of the pill?

it sucked so incredibly bad for me, did things to my body i never should have put up with. and i wouldn't have put up with it if i'd known the risks. however, for some people, it isn't that bad, they can find one that won't treat them so bad and love it. that's fine. regulating periods, though, was never a high priority for me. not getting pregnant was. in that, i guess it did just what it was supposed to. but i went form having mild periods to crippling periods and nightmarish pms.

I voted that it is very good. But for every single woman (and the man in the relationship to) it is a personal choice that shouldn't be forced one way or another.

I really do wish I could go off of it because in all honesty I do not think it is natural or healthy. And I have been on them for over 10 years which I think is horrible. For me it is not an option to go off of them though.

I absolutely do not ever want to have children. Other people's children are great, but at 28 years old I know that I do not wish to have any children of my own. This is my personal decision. Unfortunately, doctors (at least in my area) do not see it this way. Therefore, the only option I have to make sure that I do not get pregnant is to take the pill. I have been with my boyfriend for 7 years now, and he does not want to have children either. Again because he is only 31 doctors are not quick to jump on the vasectomy idea for him. I am allergic to condoms so I'm pretty much up shit's creek. I guess I will just have to wait a few more years or look for a more progressive doctor who will actually listen to me for once.

Good luck. My advice is to be supportive of your girlfriend even if you don't like her decision and to help her research and find good doctors.

^ well, she hasn't made a decision yet. I am just looking to be able to aide her in doing so. I just don't want her getting into anything presuming it's safer than it is.

I'm due to start the pill any time soon, so I'm on the same boat as your girlfriend. I'm quite anxious and I'm aware of the potential side effects but if they help me out with the pain then I'm quite happy to take them. If she suffers from really bad periods that affect your ability to do day-to-day tasks like I do then I recommend that she tries it. Most severe side effects are very rare but she can always stop taking them if somethings not right.

    Hope that's helped :)

I was on it for quite some time, and it made my periods much lighter and less painful, and also sex with no condoms, yay!
I was put on a light dose, the lightest dose possible, and I had no side effects. All i can say since I've gotten off is my acne is back, oh dear!

ive been on the pill off and on since i was 16 and it works quite well for me. im not super sensitive to hormones, which (in my personal opinion at least) is what makes it really difficult for some women.
i started on try cyclen and it wasnt a great one for me. not atrocious, but the triphasic pills (ones that ahve a different dose each week) can increase teh chance of yeast infections for some women and thats what happened to me. now im on alesse which is a fairly low dose pill and it works quite well with my chemistry

I've also been on and off the pill since I was 16. Mostly it was awesome, however last autumn I started taking a different kind to the one I had been on til then and it all went to hell from there. I was in a foul mood most of the time, super sensitive and crying over stupid things, no sex drive, etc... So I stopped taking the pill in December and been pill-free ever since. Now my period is all over the place and the cramps are absolutely awful but I'm hoping it'll settle down after a while and in any case, it's still worth it as I feel mentally so much better. I could go back to the pill I was on before that didn't give me any grief but I don't really want to anymore. The only downside about not being on the pill is that we have to use condoms for now.

I never minded it until now. I'm on loestrin and it's supposed to only give 4 day periods and the sharp SHARP pains I get the first day is terrible. I hate it! I can't even move! It's like I'm giving birth for crying out loud!

Wow thats really similar to my situation!! I want to go off of it but yeah its really the only sure way, though right now I don't think I want to have my own children, I'm still young I guess and might change my mind blah blah. I'm allergic to condoms too, (naturalamb condoms are good and dont irriate me but expensive if you ever need to use a condom for backup).

For me its been kind of up and down but I've never had really bad problems with birth control pills. Some people throw up from them but thats never really happened to me. Its hard to decide what problems are from the pill or what, but at least lately I've had some headaches and weird stuff going on. I've been on it since I was 14 though and for the most part its been fine and I enjoy controlling my period. Though I agree with a lot of girls about how I do feel it is unnatural and again the fact that I don't even know if some problems are related to it or not kinda bothers me. Its also hard to get off of it so its an important decision to make. I am honestly afraid to stop taking it cuz I know my body will go nuts.

But yeah through talking to people, I see that it affects people completely differently from the next so its hard to say.

I have alot of questions about IUD's personally. Do you know a good link, or even have some advice for information about IUd's?

I was put on the pill to regulate my period too (before that, my periods were all over the place--one time I didn't have one for 11 months!). The first brand I was on (Loestrin) was ok since it made my periods last only about 2 days. But I didn't feel mentally healthy on it. Now I'm on Orthotricyclen Lo and it works really well. I don't feel messed up, my periods are regular, and well...there's the little advantage of not having to use condoms ;)

I'm on the Pill and it works for me. But everyone's different and the only way to know if it will work for you (or your girlfriend) is to try it. If negative side effects occur, let the doctor know.

    Peace and love
