I don't support it at all..... "You must die for taking the life of another". All that is saying is that it's wrong to kill, but it's alright if it's justified. Just like when a mother teaches her children not to hit by swatting them.

no people who commit horrible crimes are in need of psychiatric treatment not prison or the death penalty.

In every situation imaginable, I am against capitol punishment. There are some god awful crimes that occur all the time, but I still do not feel that anyone has the right to take the life of another individual, no matter what the scenario.

Yeah, I used to think like you towards capital punishment. But in the past, a very close friend of mine was raped a left for dead in a stranded van. Thoughts and feelings sometimes change when it "hits home"......................

oh I agree, I've had some pretty hit home events too. I guess a big one would be having my college roomate die in the WTC, but I just can't buy into the eye for an eye philosophy.

i dont support the death penalty unless it's for someone that is proven to really be a danger (escape, etc.) and that is proven cannot be helped.

i dont think it's our right to judge others and kill them.

I have no time to read everything that has been posted so I am gunna post my true thought on the subject in the title. I fully believe in the death penalty, but I don't think it is used properly, I think they shoul dbe punished the way thier victims were. I also think the death penalty should apply to child molesters, and raipsts, rape is a awful, nasty, horrible thing. However before being killed I think they should be raped themselves so they can see what its like.

I'm down with the death penalty, kinda wish we had it here sometimes but as mentioned in other places, I can't trust any legal and mental health system, let alone New Zealand's crap one, to convict guilty people every time. I would never forgive myself had I supported the death penalty for a person whom, later was found to have not committed the crime.

If, and only if, I knew that the person definitely did commit the crime, and it met the brutality and seriousness criteria I have inside my head in terms of crime (which could be quite rightly called into question-I consider serial rapists and murderers on the level as with other posters-especially if there is no remorse and no external factors that could have impacted on the crime, say like with a group of 11-year-old kids awhile ago in New Zealand who beat someone to death-I would have found it hard to execute them, because of them being kids and still very impressionable), I would be comfortable sentencing someone to death.

The reason for this is the mistrust I have for the legal system and their seemingly endless fuck-ups like letting brutal offenders into the community because we couldn't afford to keep them there, only to have them do something even worse-you have no idea how many times it's happened. I just don't think it is worth the risk to sit there and say 'but we don't have the right to take others lives' and 'thou shalt not kill' blah blah blah. We do have the right to protect innocent people, and government may not be right all the time, but they sure hit the nail on the head when they decided that murder and rape are wrong.

I don't look at this as "an eye for an eye". It's a matter of public safety. If these people are a high-risk to re-offend, we are better off without them. I live in a prison town. We have Paul Bernardo here forever, he is never getting out. If someone gets "dangerous offender" status, they are never allowed out again.

"Do you believe in the death sentence/penalty?"

No, I believe it's an urban legend like bacteria free tap water and tigers.

The death penalty is here to stay. And I strongly support it. Anyone who kills someone(depending on the situation) should be killed themselves as well.

and if they didn't kill someone, should they still be killed...because that happens more often than you think.
I don't label myself a Hippie, but you do, I'd say such a strong belief in the death penalty prevents you from being a true one.

No! cause if they didn't kill them then they will be set free unless evidence points other wise.

You certainly have a lot of trust in the legal system! I promise you that it isn't a good as you think, refer to about 10 posts in this thread that mention that. Evidence can seem to point to a conclusion, but unless it is absolutely fool-proof DNA evidence, the death penalty should not be used,....eyewitnesses are constantly wrong, circumstantial evidence can be manipulated by the prosecution.

Think about it, if even one person is put to death unjustly, doesn't that make the whole system wrong?

I'm so sorry to hear of your friends loss :(

I strongly beleive in the death penalty. Why should we as tax payers pay to house, clothe and feed a murderer or rapist for the rest of there life. I suppose I feel so strongly about this topic because I worked in a prison for a year and got to see first hand alot of the shit that goes on.

well, if they find a raped and murdered woman on someones property AND there is a DNA match of say 1 in 100 million people, I'd say there is legitimate evidence against that person....

i do trust DNA technology to a point.

It sure beats a white woman saying they were raped by a black, and then having a random black man railroaded into a death sentence by a racist jury on hearsay testimony and one eyewitness account.
