I am really struggling to find things to feed my son. He's so sick of purees but giving him new foods makes me a bit nervous, I don't want to give him something he's not supposed to have. I think I know what's ok and what's not... but I haven't wanted to take any chances. Anyway, now that he's getting older I want to make up a pretty solid menu for him and I need some ideas. Hes tried little bits of all sorts of things ... like mashed potatoes with a little gravy, cranberry sauce, different cereals, oatmeal, crackers and some breads he has teeth (his top front two and has 2 bottom comming in) and eats fruits all the time. mostly apples. the only thing hes seemed to have a problem with is yogurt. He's only had it a few times mixed with fruits or cereal, and it seemed to upset his tummy. He was up at night irritated on both occasions but I'm not 100% sure it was the yogurt... I haven't wanted to give it to him again though. so any ideas? what did/do your kids eat at this age? Also, any advice on switching from formula to milk would be appreciated because I'm trying to learn as much as I can about that before we get there...
For the formila to milk thing, for a couple weeks, I mixed homo milk with her formula half and half. Then, I increased it to 3/4 milk to 1/4 formula. And about 3 to 4 weeks later, she was on milk. She didn't care one bit. I thought I was in for a big struggle, but it was really easy. As for food...I would cook supper and kind of give her whatever seemed fine for her to eat. If she didn't like it, I would just fall back on the baby food. I bought some of the big jars of the fancy casseroles if she couldn't eat what we were eating. I found it was good transition food...still smooth enough for her to eat, but it started to introduce more texture and flavours. Heck, they were so good sometimes I wanted to eat them for supper, lol
my mom fed me cereal when I was a baby and would cry all the time. nowadays...cow milk is filled with so many parasites and hormones that I wouldn't recommend anyone drink. find out of soy milk is healthy for a baby. that is a lovely treat for a human. yum.
It sounds like youve been giving him great foods. Fruits and veggies are safe bets, especially the soft ones and purees. There are loads of combinations you can do if hes getting bored. If mixing it up doesnt work maybe just start giving him bits of your (healthy) food, if hes eating apple now The yoghurt thing could be lactose inolerance in some form or as someone else said just a reaction to the nasties in cows milk, so i wouldnt try it again too much. Soya has its downsides too though in large quantities...rice milk ive never heard of problems with, but again not too much as hes so young! Fruit and veggie purees...soft fruits like berries, and things like oatbran. Sounds like youre doing just great
Thats pretty much what I've been trying to do, but I just don't want to give him something he's not supposed to have without realizing it. I noticed on a few baby sites they suggest giving things like a slice of toast with jam ... I just can't imagine him eating a whole slice of toast. It would just end up all over him. lol. When should I try teaching him to use a spoon? I know he's not ready for that right now. He's in a phase where he realy likes throwing things right now. lol. another question, are bananas ok if they're not cooked? I heard that was a no no... and about the milk... all the crap in there does make me pretty nervous, which is why i want to look into it now and figure out what to do from there. Can't you buy organic milk without all the hormones and chemicals in it? I'm sure my doctor will tell me just to throw milk at him when he hits 12 months and not think twice about it. I'm not a big milk drinker myself. I just use it for cooking mostly. What is he supposed to have if I opt not to give him milk? if he can't have large quantities of soy or rice milk? does anyone know anything about the "toddler formulas"? I was looking forward to saving money not having to buy formula anymore lol. but those seem like a safe step.
Well i can answer about bananas, i know for sure theyre fine raw, aslong as theyre fully ripe. The greeny ones can make little ones gag a bit. But yellow nanas are really good raw. Ive never had problems with babies and nanas anyway Obviously organics always best too to avoid the bad stuff
My ped told me that the formulas for toddlers were a waste of time, but if you're not comfortable using homo milk then I would say that's the best bet. As for the bananas, no worries, they're fine Anything that sounded a little weird for me to feed Lea Lea when she was 10 months, I just didn't. I followed my intuition about what she was ready to eat and what she wasn't. I didn't think she would every be on regular food, but now some days the kid eats more than me. If you're eating something and he is showing intrest in it, try it.
My son went on rice milk at 14 months. He developed an allergy to cow milk. And I was leary of giving him soy. He's been drinking rice milk ever since. At this point he can tolerate cow milk in small doses, but I still use rice. He also drinks lots of water and occasionally juice. If the baby is eating a good balanced diet then milk is just a supplement. It is no longer necessary for him. He needs a lot of high fat foods for another year or so, but you can get that from olives, avacados, butter, olive oil, stuff like that. Just give him plenty of water to drink and he'll be fine. He can really eat anything you eat as long as it's not too spicey and it's cut up small enough. Finger foods are great at this age. The pincher (sp?) grip, first finger and thumb is great to help them develop speech. Give him cheerios. He won't choke of them as they dissolve in the mouth very quickly. (Might gag a bit on the first couple, but he'll learn quickly.) Kathi
Totally a finger food stage! Quartered/sliced grapes, banana slices, avocado chunks, cheerios, kix ,rice square cereals, cooked bow tie or elbow pasta plain or to dunk, soft cooked & chunked carrots (or any kind of veggie) peas, raisins, apple sauce or soft cooked apple chunks Stay away from highly acidic foods until 1 to 1/2 years~ like strawberries, cranberries and tomato products For the toast try cutting into triangles so they are easier to maneuver, My kids always loved that!
At 10 months, my baby was eating mostly what we were eating. I just would cut it up in tiny pieces and let her have at it. She is a great eater. She is my second child, so I was much more relaxed. My son was on purees until like 18 months, and never really moved on from there, he's a very picky eater. For milk, I used the Next Step Formula from 10 months until one year old. After she was one year old, I'd mix half formula with half whole organic milk (yes I know people must think I'm horrible, but I do give my kids Organic milk). I did that for a week, then went to 1/3 formula-2/3 milk for a week. By week 3, she was 100% milk. She still drinks about 5 bottles of whole milk a day, along with 3 meals and snacks.
I'm on the same page with you! My DS is 10.5 months old and we are introducing more new foods every week. Remember that now is the time for your DC to learn how to feed himself and just have fun. He is still getting most of his nutrition from formula or breastmilk. I formula-fed my DD, who is now 9 and don't really remember how we transitioned her. My DS is a boobie baby, so we won't be doing cow's milk with him. If you opt to go with a milk alternative, just run it by your ped to make sure it has enough fat content. Good luck!
Isaac is 10 months and eats just about everything we eat. Are you feeding him any meats yet? Isaac has had chicken, turkey, beef, and ham. He's also had all kinds of beans and lentils. He eats hard cheeses (like cheddar, parmesan), pasta, cheerios, all kinds of fruits and veggies, there's so much they can eat. I worried about him choking a first too, but he seemed to figure the whole chewing thing out pretty quick.
When Manny was that age he was a big fan of couscous, rice, pasta for starches. Any fruits he loved, LOVED grapes (cut into quarters to avoid choaking), cantalope and honeydew melons. Peas were also a hit. He still doesn't like meat, so I don't push it. He really loved and still loves beans... kidney beans, black beans... any bean, really. Beans are awesome, he probably eats beans once a day. Corn square cereal, if you can get it where you are, is a lifesaver! I keep a bag of it on me at all times! lol. Honey, nuts and strawberries are still a big no-no, as would be any soft, unpasterized cheese like some feta or brie. I've read that fish is ok after 10 months, but stay away from the "long living" fish like tuna, as they have higher mercury content than most other fish.
