With the internet, a 40 year old man has the time to plan and edit responces and... convince a 16 year old young woman to leave her home and parents (who love her, but she won't remember that for a couple of more years) He (this hypothetical guy, not the OP's true love) also has the opportunity to meet many young women until he happens upon one who responds to his line. It's hard to convince a 16 year old that the love she feels is not going to last. I hope the OP doesn't take her opportunity to learn things the hard way. (Hell, I hope I'm wrong and this guy (not the hypotheical one) is the love of her life and they have a long marriage and many grandchildren. But I won't bet on it.)

You're 16 and don't have a clue. There is nothing right about a grown man trying to date a child. Yes at 16, YOU ARE A CHILD. Falling in love with someone who is your age and growning together is the open minded experience. Falling for a PEDIFILE is wrong without exception. You should look to yourself when you start calling people names.

The girl in question is 16 not 18. If she is 18 and wants to date a 45 year old it is her choice. At 16 it is illegal for a 45 year old to date her. On a personal note.....If a 45 year old man was screwing my 16 year old daughter he would be in a grave or a jail cell depending on who got to him first. :behead:
Whether the stupidity mentioned in the OP is legal is less important than the fact that running off with this guy is a real dumb thing to do.
This sounds like an epically terrible idea for nearly unlimited reasons. Top three reasons: - The age difference is too great - putting legal questions aside, they're going to be interested in different things. - But the legal issues are there for a reason, too. - No one should go to live with anyone they've never met in real life. You need to date someone for a long time before taking that leap. Jesus, this is a bad idea.

It sounds more like the 40yr old is wanting to manipulate and control a young girl. It is a form of abuse. The 16yr old is too young and has alot of growing up to do. She hasn't even had a chance to expereince all that the world has to offer. The parents should take away her computer and call the cops on this man. This shouldn't be tolerated at all.

I can't answer the question, because I don't believe in, or maybe care for, right or wrong all too much. But it depends totally on the individuals, I dont see the age gap as inherently abusive. The law certainly has nothing to do with the original question, just because something is against the law doesn't make it good/bad/whatever. Legalism bugs me. Do people change suddenly on their 18th birthday or something (and only in certain countries of course)? Must've missed that study. Certainly i wouldn't disagree that to me it seems like a stupid thing to do, not having met him in person and all.
