Hey guys, I've not been on the forum for ages (not that I even used to post that much, just absorb the wisdom of others), I was homeless in London for a few months, no net, but I've just come to Canada. I'm leaving Toronto in a week or so and hitching/greyhounding through the States and Mexico, then travelling through Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina for a total of 6 months. I've posted in the some other forums, but didn't get a great response, so I thought I try old faithful and see if any of you guys and girls have any tips on what to do/where to go, or indeed anything that comes into your prodigious minds.

    Peace and love and shit

You really make me wish I was male. Then I could hitch hike and not worry about being raped/murdered/dumped in a ditch etc. But then, if I wasn't female, I wouldn't have half as much fun!!

Me too:( I know that happens to men too but its far less often, and at least they can usually defend themselves a little better. Here I am 5 feet tall and a bag of bones and i cant even lift heavy shopping bags. Im always seen as an easy target, its happened loads. Im really jealous

Solution: take either a bloke or a knife with you.
Sucks to have that kinda vibe around, but sometimes you need to bow to reality (and I'm not telling whether I'm on about blokes or knives ;) )

yes, once you leave the southern US border Spanish becomes an essential tool for survival. Central America's a particularly friendly place to travel. had some wicked times in Guatemala and Honduras.

When i was in central America (with friend) we met loads of single girls doing the same thing. I had so much admiration for them getting up and going on their own.
Stick to well travelled routes and enlist guides for other stuff. Being single you will meet more travellers anyway........hang out for a few days.
Thinking about doing something like travelling can be scary....but when you're doing it your confidence comes back and you'll never regret the places you'll see and people you'll meet.

Safe for the encouraging remarks, and the cautioning ones too. Everybody I talk to seems to think I will die as surely as Arsenal will lose the premiership (well maybe not lose, just not win, but that is losing for them). My step-dad was sexually assaulted in Guatemala as 19 year travelling the world, so I don't think my gender is massively important, although the fact that I'm meeting a beautiful girl in Peru and travelling together for 3 months may make some parts tricky I guess. But you can't let that stop you, I will heed the words of warning and be careful though. I don't think the puny replacement swiss army knife (after the last expensive one disappeared) will carry much weight, but I'd never use a knife anyway. that was a silly thing to say, maybe in certain situations, but not getting mugged.
