Does anyone know of a decent, cheap, and Linux friendly dial-up ISP? I will be moving soon and dial-up is going to be my only option, atleast for awhile.
Yeah. Buy either a 'Walkie-Talkie' or get the cables to hook to your cell phone. It'll be about the same 44K speeds. The walkie talkie is so you can get the i-net from a friend by voice on a relay basis. I didn't know dial-up still exists. A-O-Hell, or Webzero are about the only dial-up I know of that still exist. Best of luck to ya bro.
I moved here in 2005, and broadband wasn't available until a few months ago - I was going to get satellite Internet but they couldn't tell me if I had a clear view unless I paid a tech by the hour including drive-time to come and look. Fat chance, I'll do without. So, I got an account with Netscape. It wasn't the absolute cheapest, but the service is very good - no busy signals, or constantly dropping the call like I've had with others. Just be aware that with them (and some others), when you no longer need them your cancellation has to be in writing, they won't cancel by phone or through their website. Write the address down when you sign up, that's a lot easier than digging it out with Google later. Good luck, and I hope you get broadband soon.
Well, many years ago I know you could pretty much get AOL for free. All you had to do was call up and cancel each month and they would offer you another month free. But my service with them was so bad even then it was not worth having. A few years ago before I got DSL I went searching and found a bunch of small companies that offered dial-up really cheap. I used one for quite awhile and had really good service with them for only $5.75 a month. I guess most of them have gone out of business or something now as I can't seem to find many. Thanks for the suggestions. Hopefully something faster will come into the area soon but for now I might just have to go into town and go to the library after I have pulled all my hair out using dial-up.
AOL is the most expensive and restrictive option out there. tons of small companies exist that offer it and you can probably find it for around $10.
